Mindarie Marina/Quinns Beach

 G'day,

I am new to Fishwrecked but just moved up to Butler area about a year ago. After not fishing for ages ive stripped my reels and got everything working nicely again and am keen to drop a line in the quinns/mindarie area. Ive got a few questions for you landbased crew:

- Has anyone fished the beach right near Quinns Beach Surf Life Saving Club/Portofino's restaurant? I went for a beach walk there yesterday and its looking awesome, clear deep gutters and no weed. What do you normally catch there? looks like a decent whiting spot. is quinns dog beach a better option?

- What is the inside of the mindarie marina like? is it worth giving it a miss and just hitting the outside wall? ive seen a few people fishing there but catching mainly blowies which doesnt interest me in the slightest.

- I know herring are everywhere but does anyone know any decent herring spots around quinns/mindarie? I'm going to be buying a fish smoker and apparently the herring come up trumps in it.

- Last but not least but has anyone had much luck with fishing with those Gulp Maggots? the herring love nomal maggots but i wouldnt mind trying the gulp ones that soak in their secret juice. Im really keen to target herring...underated fish i reckon but maybe ill change my mind if i ever catch a mulloway!

Cheers and tight lines!

Gday yes quinns beach is good for herring, tailor, whiting etc

go to the third rock groin north of mindarie keys you will catch plenty there - if the groin is full of fisho's just fish either side of it if your after herring use the pre-rigged baitchaser rigs ( the ones with the little fluoro green beads and chem sharpened hooks) with a bit of fresh prawn you will catch more than you can smoke. Use pollard berley in cages and mulies for tailor at sun up/sun down heaps of fish there c heers dave

Maggots

Sun, 2015-01-11 12:33

Ive used the gulp maggots a couple of times, and didn't have much success with them. I have caught herring on a green fly set up below a berley float on a spinning rod, at ocean reef and Mindarie marina

Sun, 2015-01-11 14:35

The beach is awsome for everything, big or small, i fish there often. Loads of herring and tailor there in the arvo, chance at a mulloway  as well. As for the marina, get a big rod and a big bait, preferably live, burley a spot up in the open part of the marina (up the back) on an in coming tide throw out the big bait crack a beer, stretch the muscles and wait for mr sambo to come along and smoke the hell outta you. If not the burley trail will attract plenty of snook, skippy and tailor plenty of bream and undersized pinkies there too. Mulie cubes on single hook does the damage.

 Cheers Rob and James, Great

 Cheers Rob and James,

Great info lads cheers for that. Funny you say that Rob, the one time I did fish inside the marina I've caught some decent size silver bream in the marina near that pub "the boat"..casting whole coral prawns near the boat pylons....but at the end of my fishing session something decent absolutely wreaked havoc on me and spooled my reel....i didnt know what the hell was going on haha, could have been a sambo.

Just a couple of questions for you Rob: when you said you can get snook and tailor inside the marina, should i fish directly behind the ocean side of the wall but inside the marina where the dirt carpark and multimillion dollar properties are? looks like it drops off there in some sections....or for snook and tailor would it be better to rig up heavier near the pub.

Also Rob, I'm not asking for specific spots but do you have better luck fishing the dog beach at Quinns? or further back toward the surf club/portofino's. Beer O'clock said fish the third groyne up from Mindarie which from memory is the dog beach area, or maybe I'm wrong. either way there is some nice water around there at the moment.

Cheers again

 Haha those pesky sambos

Sun, 2015-01-11 20:35

Haha those pesky sambos catch ya off guard all the time hey there is also alot of other rippers in there, i fish there in my kayak and i. Normally hanging around up the back and near the restaurant but search around the entire marina and find a favorite spot, but there is fish in there just gotta suss them out. As beer o'clock said the third groyne is the rite area i was there on tuesday night and around the fourth groyne there is a very deep gutter formed up wich produced a few for me and has great potential. But its all a matter of trial and error i say, if something aint working try something or somwhere different. But that whole stretch of coast would have to be my fav. Best of luck

 Hey man, I fished Quinns

Fri, 2015-01-16 13:16

 Hey man,

I fished Quinns Beach last night and was rewarded with my fist Tailor from the beach.  Headed down about 6.30 , as soon as the sun went down bang a nice 41cm Tailor. I was stoked. I have also recently moved to the area from the UK and am new to the fishing thing so i was made up last night. I would post a picture but i have no idea how to on this site.

The beach at front of portifinos does pruduce great fish at times, just gotta fish it hard. I used to fish there a few years back least 2-3 times a week for round a year. In that time got a heap of rays, numerous sharks, a dozen or so gummies and a few pink snapper after storms.

I was there when you were just walking the beach and i saw a couple of lads fishing just left of the groyne.

Tue, 2015-01-20 15:04

 Hey mate,

I was actually in between the 1st and 2nd groyne. Right by the car park opposite the quinns bottle shop. And yes i did cook the fish up mate it was on the plate within the hour. I have caught Tailor before off the rocks at Mindarie but this was special as it was my first from the beach. If somebody could tell me how to put pictures up id be hapy to post the pics.

Might have another bash down there tomorrow night after work mate if you are interested?

its easiest to use a website

Tue, 2015-01-20 17:10

its easiest to use a website called photo bucket, upload your pic to that site once you have created your own log in, then copy the image file to fishwrecked pasting it in the comment box, you will be promted to paste the file again into a little drop box once youve done that then preview the post, if it doesnt work move the sentence down the page a bit

Placky Maggots

Yes they do work, just not as well as the real deal. I use them for herring to toughen up a bait. Put a couple off them on a hook and sweet bread it with Prawn. They hit the Prawn and if they dont hook up thats that, but with the wog on they come back for more, and its shit loads more durable.
