Molloy Island and surrounds

Hi everyone, long time since using the forum, to the point my account is gone! (or perhaps it's my memory that's gone...)

Anyway, I'm heading down to Molloy Island near Augusta for three nights over the long weekend and wondered if anyone had any tips for fishing the area. I'll have a 3.9m dinghy with me so would be keen to get out on the river and try for some beefy bream. Is it worth trying for any of the bigger stuff in the deeper parts of the river? I've heard the odd report of snapper but don't know how reliable they are.

What about the local beaches around Augusta or nearby this time of year? I also have the 4WD so am happy to explore a bit.

Pretty keen to get the Mrs onto something a bit more substantial than a blowie or herring!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Cheers.

to throw back 15 undersize for each size bream. Anywhere upstream of the ferry to the bridge. Not sure if there is Schnapper but worth a try towards the mouth, there's always a mixed grill down that end.

Lived in Augusta for a few

Tue, 2015-02-24 09:47

Lived in Augusta for a few years. No snapper in the river. Bream, herring, KG whiting, yellowfin whiting, tailor, dusky morwong and baby salmon is the common fish in there. Crabs upto molloy and in the fresher.part and creeks marron. Ive heard of good catches from the new augusta marina rockwalls but never fished them. Never done much beach fishing there mainly rock hopping and always something to catch.

My advice is simple.....Heavy

My advice is simple.....Heavy leader!!! Because I am stubborn and use 10lb max on Bream I lost count how many times I was bricked . Maybe I was doing something wrong but I had to go 20lb to hold these buggers. The 20lb definitely did not deter these monsters amongst the snags.

Thanks for the bits of advice, will definitely up my leader with the snagging I'm reading about!
What about lures? Is it worth using divers etc or will I just be throwing money away?
Stick with bait or soft plastics?
Cheers

I never used hard bodies down

Wed, 2015-02-25 13:47

I never used hard bodies down there or blades but lost a heap of jigheads/grubs so switched to bait. I'd much rather lose a 2/0 and a piece of lead. On that particular day they were very aggressive and BIG.

Good luck

Try off the new marina, heaps of baby skippy and yakkas for the light gear. Chuck out a livie on heavy gear, caught a 40kg sambo inside the marina after fishing there for about 30 mins, might have just got lucky but there should be a few around

Call into the tackle shop

Thu, 2015-02-26 10:17

If you need any info call into the local tackle shop Augusta Xtreme Outdoor Sports. The staff there are very well informed as to what fish are caught where and with what bait lure etc.

At the moment there are plenty of King George, Yellow fin whiting, Flounder, salmon trout and herring around in the river. Out at the new marina usually are schools of tailor in the eveing and alway plenty of herring.

There is also a big flat head (called Gargantuan) in the marina with a head over 1m wide if it is caught and released with pics to proof it I know the tackle shop are giving away a good prize.

I do work at Augusta Xtreme Outdoor Sports and I own it as well.

So my word stands.... as to a great prize if you catch and release the flat head with a photo for proof with the marina in the back ground.

Gargantuan

Sorry my mistake it was supposed to read 1 meter long.

The divers whom were building the marina said the flat head was there everyday and has been sighted many time after when they have been doing thier inspections.
