Mongrel Bastard Award

The following low life are hereby awarded the Mongrel Bastard Award for their contribution to the decline of the blue manna fishery in the Mandurah estuary.

Biak Za Humg
Pa Hniang
Pa Urk
Van Biak Thong
Sam Cin
Ni LingSarum

I am very happy to see in my local paper (the Mandurah Mail) the above pieces of human excrement where each fined $9100 + $188 for costs for taking undersize crabs at Coodanup on 3/12/16. Now that is what I call a good result for their effort. I hope it hurts. The total catch they had was 183 crabs with 182 of them being under size. The smallest being 88.9mm.

Also convicted for taking undersize crabs where the following persons,

Edzel Cubangbang Aguilar
Winefredo Abucejo Riverval
Teddy Lavitoria Yalung

They had a bad day and only caught 123 undersize crabs between them
Anguilar was fined $2250 + $188 costs, Riverval now owes $1550 +$188 and Yalung was fined $2350 + $188 costs.

And just to show that Mandurah hasn't exclusivity on this type of activity a Bunbury man was caught with 55 undersize crabs on 9/12/16 at island Point. His smallest being 97.8mm.

Shannon Collard

He was fined $2950 + $188 court costs.
With our crab stocks in a bit of a slump for the last couple of years (yes I know there are isolated patches allowing good catches) overall we need to be careful of just what we are taking and how it will impact on the future of the resource.

To our Fisheries Officers, a hearty well done guys and ladies, and a big thank you.

Can i ask a genuine question

Thu, 2017-03-16 19:21

Can i ask a genuine question of interest because i dont know  the answer.  I hope that it doesnt become a discussion about racism.

The last gentleman, his surname suggests he is indigenous.  He may, or he may not be.  I dont know the answer to that.

But assuming he is,  what are the regulations in regards to taking undersize catch by indigenous peoples.  I thought, probably incorrectly, that indigenous persons were exempt?  Or is that just when traditional means are being used to catch?

I really dont know the laws very well in that regard.

Can anyone clarify?

don't need a license

Fri, 2017-03-17 23:13

I have a couple of aboriginal mates who go fishing with me from time to time, they don't require a fishing license but they still need to comply with size and bag limits. As the skipper of my boat it is also my responsibilty to ensure that happens. Have to admit though that my mates would be the first to say they couldn't play a didgeridoo to save their lives lol. Just your average ozzy blokes.
They also have some different rules when it comes to "traditional food", such as turtles etc.. To complicated to go into that though..

Hi Randall

I am not sure of the answer to that question. However, I took an indiginous fellow fishing last week and he informed me that he didn't need a Fishing from Boat Licence to catch demersals. cheers Pete.

If Indigenous people aren't

Thu, 2017-03-16 19:54

If Indigenous people aren't fishing using traditional methods they should be subject to the same rules as the rest of us. I highly doubt they were catching dhueys at Direction Bank 300 years ago.

If you look on the marine charts you can see where the river mouth was between freo and rottnest by following the depth contours.  Pretty much where the deepwater shipping channel now is.

Wrong?

Fri, 2017-03-17 06:38

Towed a young bloke back from Dirk Hartog island a week back, he had broken down after spending the day spearfishing. Took 11 trout, he said they are allowed to take enough to feed their family, so who is right.

Years back rang fisheries to dob in some people netting in what was closed waters and was asked what colour are the people, black. He said they can fish by tradional means there, BUT monofilament nets are not tradional means in my book!

What would happen if I went to China and started killing their tigers for their fur? Do you reckon I'd be deported after being punished under their laws?

The organs are donated to those who need them, no waiting list for kidneys corneas livers etc. Something good comes from something bad.
