Moore River Bash Dec 29th 2010
I decided to break out and do an overnighter at Moore River yesterday. Conditions were trying in the evening with a strong SW and lots of surface weed.
I had some luck early with Tailor 52cms, 49cms and 46cms. More were caught but released. as the evening moved on the Tailor became quite small at chopper size. It was way to windy and weedy to put out a set line so called it a day early and socialised a bit before hitting the swag.
This Tailor was quite interesting as its lower jaw and tail had been bitten off. This poor guy was trying to win a lotto ticket for the biggest fish in the group. Weight wise it was but it didn't come up to the measure due to "missing bits" (a bit like me LOL).
The morning saw some balmy conditions albeit still a SW breeze. Quite a smoke haze due to Toodyay fire.I started fishing at 4:30am using baby Mullies and got hammered by quite good size Herring. A few chopper Tailor managed to get a crack but were all released. I kept a few Herring for the smoker and release a large number.
I left the beach at 7am and cruised home to do the chores (that's the bit I hate about fishing). This was some of the result.

Top stuff Vince And a great reward for effort
Hard to beat a strong south wester and floating weed for worse conditions, but it looks like you found some good fish. I hope the weed disappears soon, or it could stuff up a good weekend of fishing. All the best, Colin

Thanks Colin.
The weekend doesn't look that bad mate with some SE stuff happening.
The conditions with the weed up there are not unfishable but, predicably, those lazy buggers with rods propped in holders had no success at all. My trick is to cast and retrieve slowly on the bottom as the fish are definitely there and the bait will be gone in a matter of minutes if not seconds. Note also Colin that my last two attempts have landed the biggest of the Tailor early in the evening around 4-4:30pm so it pays to read the tide and start early. Not sure I can make it this weekend otherwise I would join up with you.
Cheers,

Hi Vince We popped up to a spot on the other side of the
river today and while the weed wasn't bad, the southerly came in very early and was howling by the time we left. I managed one nice tailor and the other boys got a few herring. There are still plenty of herring around up that way.

Good luck up there mate
The town is quite busy and you will find a lot of people who like to fish very close to you so keep your cool. They don't get away that often LOL.
I am sure that with this hot weather approaching the weed will clear and conditions, although hot, will be perfect. From my experience at the moment you will nail Herring to really good size early in the morning (before sun-up). The Tailor seem to be running on the tide. To be sure to capitalise on both options I have been using small mullies with 3/0 gangs and some ghost cotton.
Let us know how you go.

Note of Warning
The beach up north of the reef has almost disappeared so be careful if you head up past there.
