mooring in tidal areas

Hi all

Just after some advice on mooring when its tidal. Its going to be my first time mooring the boat and i want to sleep well at night so need some advice. How does everyone do it? heading to the monties and when we are there the tides are around the 2m mark and i have heard they can run pretty fast so how do i ensure it doesnt go anywhere its a 7.5m ally that weights close to 3T.

Im thinking normal anchor out the front then rear possibly to a star picket or a burried anchor and is it worth putting another anchor over the side with a few meters of rope out as a just in case or is this over kill. How tight should the ropes be do they need to be quite slack to allow for the rise/fall of the tide.

Cheers

Rod

 You sleeping on the boat?

I usually take an oversize plough with plenty of chain and use it like a temp mooring. The tidal flow isn't too bad there but pays to be aware of which way the wind will change overnight.

I have ran 2 anchors in a v formation when the wind was up.

you generally would only put one out the front and one back (kedge) if you say are up against the beach (have a look at my Easter thread Abrolhos)
If you have room to swing then let it.
Dodgy has the best idea with the temporary mooring, and/or dive on it to make sure it is set properly.
Also, anchor in sand or mud if you possibly can, reef picks, most weed, coral and coral rubble is generally poor holding and not reliable for sleeping or unattended despite what some people here say.

If sleeping onboard, use the anchor alarm unless you have a stupid f-ing Lowrance with an alarm volume equivalent to a drowning cockroach.
Otherwise download an anchor app to your smart phone instead.
Get a decent anchor like a Delta, Sarca, etc, Danforth are pretty hopeless and best used as a spare or kedge.

Just got back from there as well (Vinesh were you in a group of 3 boats?)

We used a ~40lb plough with really heavy chain as a mooring anchor.

Yep I definitely remember the silver & black pontoon boat, thought it may of been fisheries when it was heading towards us before we saw the rods on the roof (they anchored and dived near some bombies we were fishing).

West side on Wednesday (or Tuesday) last week.

We will be camping on the beach im sure im stressing over nothing i just want to make sure i get it right. I have a 27lb anchor but will see if i can find a heavier one and will make sure i get a large lenght of heavy chain and will leave to bow anchor set the whole stay. Im guessing we wont be able to get the boat to close to the beach due to the tides but we will have to wait and see i guess.

That would be great vinne if you could send me a pm with some info.

I can't remember the name of the bay.

Used a wave ski to paddle out to and back in after mooring the boat each day, the other boat I went with had a small blow up dinghy.

Yeah I would leave the 27lb on the bow of the boat for emergencies and pick up a 40lb plus anchor with heavy chain, short length of rope and a float for mooring.

We had some storms come through during our last trip with over 100km winds and the mooring anchor held.

V set up works best IMO

Tue, 2016-04-19 21:03

Two anchors set at a v so the boat can move with water movement, saw a boat anchored one bow anchor one stern anchor top beach turned to shit , everytime the wave came in the bow anchor lifted and the boat ended up in the shore break. Not enough slack line to allow for water movement. ended up two 4wds snatching it out of the surf in the dark.... use roughly 45 degree bow anchors up here in the Pilbara have not had a issue so fair...happy to swim to the boat in the morning if it means the boat is floating ready to go to work for the day ...

Have a good anchor light for visual peice of mind during the night...no light no boat...oops
