Tarpon

Doesn't have to be the big red one, just the ordinary tarpon. Preferably before Eagle claws came out because after that they weren't as strong. Used to snap the eyes on 5-6 per 100 ganging them up using side cutters and later ones wouldn't break one.Lot softer steel in them

J type v Circle.

This is worth a readCircle fish hooks compared to conventional style fish hooks
You +1'd this publicly. Undo

Personally I use Tarpon's when ganging, Occy's when snooding multiples and Occy circles on their own.

Circles allow you to release most fish.

article

That is a well structured article, that was made to work in the favor of the circle hook. The reason we used circles when tuna fishing is that there is actually no-one there to set the hook. The good old occy is used by fishermen setting a hook and is far more likely to catch fish when being "fished". I personally have a hard time "fishing" a rod using a circle hook as I tend to strike too early. On all my floater snapper lines I run snelled circles as I dont "fish" them. On my bottom bouncers I run, and find more effective, gammy occys.

I believe each hook definately has its place, and honestly you should have both in your tackle box.

Interesting article, but they

Interesting article, but they seem to omit some useful details.

How deep were they fishing?

Are the comm lines set lines or attended?

Edit: they were unattended it seems, and that reduces how effective J hooks will ever be.

Im not surprised by that study, because circles would "catch"

Mon, 2011-07-04 08:00

fish themselves in a long line, ie dont need a set, like conventional J style hooks, which need more imput from the angler to hook and to maintain contact with the fish.

Also if unatended J style hooks release easier.

Dont think that adds credit to a better versatile hook. JMO.

Tying circles

Mon, 2011-07-04 12:09

One interesting point this article does make is the increased hook up rate (>40%) when the circle hook is attached with the line entering the eye of the circle hook from the 'front' rather than being tied to the eye.  Many people don't seem to bother attaching circle hooks in this manner.  For those that maybe new to using circle hooks this is a point worth noting, as well is don't strike.

Depth of water in the area the tests were carried out is generally <45m.
