Mulloway on lures

Hi crew

It has been slightly touched on this site before but without much confirmation.  Is anyone targetting mulloway around the rivers/beaches on lures on this side of the country.  There are quite a bit of footage on all sorts of media floating around at the moment from the east coast, suerly similar tactics and techniques must work in the swan.

With the amount of people targetting bream and flatties surely there has been a mully or two as bycatch even on smaller lures.  From what I can gather the east coasters are using hard bodies around 120mm or bigger and 5-7inch SP's which is a bit big for bream

Thinking of having a bit of a go myself as I quite often throw poppers for tailor sessions that are usually relatively short lived which gets me wondering what's lurking at the bottom of some of the deeper holes.  anyhow bait soaking seems to be working for my mates but not me at the moment

Yeah agree with you Rig ...Very surprised noone here trolls livies too with electrics !! Its a deadly method in other locations, Where Im fromSA/Vic, trolling livies  outfishes still fishing with livies at least 10/1. The towed livie will let you know when their are fish around or not by the activity on the end of the line ...and you usually know you about to get hit before it happens. It also allows you to troll through unproductive waters until the livie lets you know there are fish in the area. Then simply work that area. I believe there are many more mulloway in this river system too !! We used yellow eyed mullet mostly. Also as much as 20 years ago I used to troll a lot for bream with small lures and nearly always caught a small Mulloway ( 3 to 6 lbs ) in a session along with the bream. Small Manns lurse were the go then.

Trolled livies, find the fish

Fri, 2012-08-17 13:46

Trolled livies, find the fish that way, next step, troll a gopro to watch the livey live and see whats havin a look and see the strike. My mates guna have this setup ready for summer, trolled livebait on downrigger with live camera to a dash mounted screen

I reckon getn a mulla on sp is the go if u know they are there. Soak a bait wnd flick a placcy around in a gutter. Placcys work just as gd at night

plastic

Yeah I was thinking the same with the plastics around the surf gutters and reefs, by the sounds most of the demersal size plastics will work which will save a bit of coin as I already have a heap for the boat but I can use a lighter jig head due to shallower water when LB.  At least if it doesnt work for mulloway tailor, sambos and snapper are always a posibility LB for the plastics

I have nearly given up on the live baits as so many times I have used live herring/tailor/mullet only to have the person next to me hook up on a fresh fillet or an old mulie ha ha, sometimes I think they are only looking for the easy feed.  Trolling them is probably a better proposition but I would rather keep my river sessions to be a land based session.  From what I have been reading trolling with outboards is a no no as they spook to easy unlike pelagics.  Eastern staters are using minn kotas, rowing or some diesel inboarsd which apparently they dont mind??

yep, diesel inboards seem to work, but not petrol outboards for mulloway trolling
