Mulloway from shore
Hi everyone,
It's not another "how to catch a mulla" thread. There is heaps of discussion on new moon vs full moon fishing for mullas from shore and I have my own theory about when the best time to fish is. I'm trying to test this theory and having only caught the one myself, I need to hear from people who have caught a mulla in the past.
So if you've ever caught a landbased mulla (not offshore) and want to share your story - I'd be really keen to hear from you. I'm chasing the date of the catch - and that's all. However, if you happen to know the approximate time and the rough size of the mulla that would be appreciated.
I've scoured the forum and pulled out 15 threads dating back to 2005 however need a heap more data to test my theory out.
Just for those who are interested in solunar theory and use the Angler's Almanac, I'm looking at other astronomical factors to predict firstly the level of aquatic activity and hopefully specifically whether mulloway should be on the prowl.
May well prove to be a junk theory...but that's where you come in. :-)

Although, we've only got a small handful of beach based mullas in WA; following are the conditions that proved successful for us.
- New moon
- High tides (peaking early evening)
- Light to moderate SW winds
- 1M + of swell
Chrisp should be able to add to this. He got a couple last season. They averaged 8kg & were caught late summer.

Agree they are all ideal factors for targeting mulla - thank you - would love dates if you can remember when?
Adding to that I think you can also look at time of year, water temps, water clarity, location, barometric pressure, changes to weather/unusual weather and then a load of astronomical conditions...some, all or none of which might help you catch a fish?
Probably a bit deep for a fishing forum - but I think there are some governing rules that determine how active species are not only in water but on land too. I'm looking into two of these rules in the hope that it helps me improve my fishing.

Dates..
Caught mine 19/02/10 around 9.00pm from memory.
Wind was Sw around 15knots 1.5meter swell so water was a bit stirred up where we fished.Probaly just right to stir things up a bit whithout being too washy.

Catch most of my Mulloway over the summer months, average size is from 8kg to 20kg, most fish are caught just after dark until about 11pm, look for dirty water or water with wash over the top, usually use Mullet as bait and have a very high strike rate. At the end of last summer (FEB/March) averaged 4 fish out of every 5 trips to the beach.
Geraldton area is just starting to begin turning up regular fish for the start of this season.
Southgates, Lives, Coro and Flatrocks all produce excellent fishing close to town. always expect to catch sharks when after Mulloway.
My pic is of a 18kg Mull from Flatrocks at 6pm in March on Mullet in dirty water, was one of 5 caught in 7 weeks

onshore winds in evening and using burley tied to beach stake
would have been over summer as camping on beach
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Caught my first ever mullas
Caught my first ever mullas last month 29th Oct whilst at the S bend Caravan park Sunday evening just after sunset 61 cm and 55 cms. (Walked about two feet off the ground for the rest of the night. grin). caught on a ganged mueli rig
Apart from a reasonable size tailor the same night and a couple of herring the day before that's all three of us caught in four days.
Still a great time for me though -brag brag brag
