My first Rotto Marlin

Hi All

Caught this IP Blue Marlin on Saturday morning just North of Rotto in 35m! It took a small tuna pusher (blue & purple colour). Est. weight 50-60kg. Great fun on 10kg rig. Swam off in good condition. Great day out with some nice SBT too.

Top work Bush.man!

it is getting better John

but still a fair way to go to match the late 90s when some boats had 8 plus fish up in a day.It is well on its way though.I am sure a few will be annoyed that the salmon dont look like getting a look in.Me personally i prefer to see marlin, macks, dollies, wahoo and yellowfin.

Nice marlin! Especially for 35m. Seems theres a few in shallower, rather than only at the trench.

Nice catch,  that looks more like a black,  glad to hear it swam off to live and be caught another day,  a fish like that is too good to be only caught once

Blue or Black?

Mon, 2011-03-07 13:02

You might be right fisherman, it is hard to tell when they are young. It came to the boat with a bright blue tail and some stripes similar to a Stripey. I assumed a young Blue? Blacks have a more rounded top fin?

I would say black

Mon, 2011-03-07 13:16

The plate of skin over the gills of a blue is about half the length of that of a black.

Well done by the way.

Mon, 2011-03-07 13:14

If you had to hold his dorsal up, its a blue. IIRC blacks can't lay theirs down.

Great fish either way!

I would call it a Black too.

I would call it a Black too. Pectoral fin is the giveaway. They go well on the light tackle.

Any pics of the back of the

Mon, 2011-03-07 13:38

Any pics of the back of the marlin? I was told that looking at the second dorsal and anal fin is an easy way to tell them apart (apart from the fixed dorsal).

Heres a pic from the Marine Fishes oF NW Australia:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Two things that stuck out for me was the start of the second dorsal and anal (dorsal before on the black, after on the blue) and also the pectoral fins seem a lot lower on the black. Obviously the fixed dorsal is obvious, but not so easy in photos

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I can see the gimble belt, but the rod hasnt got the rubber removed? Also watch the seat upholstery, them have sharp billies! LOL
