Nasty Accident in Freo Port

Info taken from Fremanlte sea rescue:

Three people are lucky to have escaped serious injury after a 50ft steel vessel collided with them in Fremantle Port this evening.

The people onboard both vessels were very shaken, although amazingly unhurt. Rescue Vessel R100 responded and transferred a crew and salvage pump onboard the disabled vessel before towing it to Fishing boat harbour where it was lifted from the water. The steel vessel suffered only minor damage.

This is a stark reminder to always keep a good lookout on your vessel whilst underway, especially at sunset and after dark.

 yeah-on the face of it

yeah-on the face of it having been hit on the stb side midships by the other vessels bow you'd guess the glass boat but there are so many variables such as did everyone have lights on, did one make an unpredictable turn, speeding etc

How often also do you get boats in channels who insist on trying to pass green to green-even had a charter vessel in a small port do it a while back.

I imagine FPA will be looking closely as well, a sunken vessel in the port has very expensive consequences for shipping.

Passing green to green isn't too bad if both boats are informed on whats about to happen.
Have done it quite a few times but never without contacting the other vessel and only if the situation requires it, certainly not common practice

of course, common in the commercial side after VHF contact and even then it can be problematic at night to make sure you are speaking to the vessel that you want (AIS helps).

But with recs  its a case of heading across to the right side of channel while the other boats keeps going that way as well until you just pull up and let him go thru where he wants, even worse when the other boat thinks hes in the right and gets stroppy!

Coming into Gero harbour early morning from longline trips was scary, crayboats coming out past the Live Cray Factory 2 or 3 abreast around the corner at 15 knots-and occasionally getting bent of shape that a boat would dare to enter the harbour at that time.

Gero

Sat, 2014-02-15 17:03

Gero at night was bad enough with the right hand turn for the last leg in, Hedland is worse with the white lead lights directly down the main street, trying to pick the flashes amongst car headlights.

Was towing an excray boat in to Carnarvon with the old rescue boat and doing it hard with strong winds and tide when a trawler decides it time to head out. The usual skipper on the trawler was teaching a newby when I called up to tell him I wanted to come in green to green. He understood but the newby did not have a clue what I was talking about. Soon sorted it out.

With rec skippers, the pros call them wood ducks for exactly that reason, when something new pops up they duck their heads in the water and scatter and wonder why they get abused. At least now with rec skippers tickets some of them have a better idea on what to do.

Not sure it's the Rec fisherman who keep running into the navigation poles in Carnarvon. Pros are just as bad.

Crabs

Think the skipper was scratching his crabs and not taking notice on where he was heading on the latest one $60 grand is the price for the replacement pole..in broad daylight too.

Yachties are our main ones, running aground cutting corners when they are 20 metres from the marker in daylight, the usual answer is---thought it was ok to do it---NOT

bad harbour

try coming into Hampton harbor at night , if your not familiar with the harbor it would be easy to get it all wrong due to the amount of lights in the harbor and on shore and there are literally thousands lights in there of every color you can think of and mobs like Baghwahn leave about 20 meters of mouring rope floating on the surface
