if you have a 8 or 10 inch unit the platinum is definatly worth it you can see changes in depth from the sattelite pic that doesnt show on the normal chart in certain areas plus you also get the 3d shading (you obviously have not looked to hard into the benefits snapper miles ) depending on what areas your fishing the smaller platinum chart is actually cheaper than the gold and covers from dunsborough to broome but if you have a smaller screen you do tend to lose those benefits
are you talking about the lines that make it look 3d or actual shading? as i have heard the lines are useless as they are just connected between depths and do not actually follow the actual contours of the bottom!! when i bought my hds back six months ago i went to several dealers and they all said it was not worth the money and i went through the added benifit with them! so if you think different i would like to see whast you mean by this shading?

the gold card is fine dont bother with the platinum with the extra expense its not worth it! they are usually all roughly around the same price

I have platinum and to honest it's not worth the extra it has 3 d but you never use it
