Navara / Rodeo/ Hilux / Triton

Looking to get a diesel 4WD twin cab ute and have narrowed it down to rodeo, hilux, triton or navara.  Will be getting something in the 95-05 vintage.  Wanted peoples opinions on the above and specifically:

1) what are the non turbo diesel versions of the vehicles like? - there are plenty of non turbo tritons about, but will they be painful to drive at 110km/h for hours?  I won't by towing a boat, just kayaks on the roof so don't need good towing capability, just want to be able to sit on 110km/h without feeling like its hard work.  Not that fussed about acceleration either, I don't fang it about.

2) Are any of them bad on fuel economy?  I've heard some stories of the newer Navara's sucking on the juice - I know the 2.8TD rodeos are pretty good, though wondered if any of them are stand out bad?  For example, the 2.7 TD '96 Navara?  I've heard some of the gearing on some models means the engine revs pretty high at 110km/h giving poor fuel economy.

Cheers

Matt

Mate my 2 bobs worth would be to go for the navara but make certain you get one with the turbo. I have a nissan Navara 05 STR turbo diesil for the work bus and am really happy with it. Currrently getting around 540kms per tank , but I have a trade mate on the back of mine full of gear (electrical contractor) so that does effect my fuel usage. I was pleasantly surprised with the speed pickup with full load on. Just got to remember about turbo lag when taking off. If you need further info. PM me your number and I will give you a call regarding it!

Rodeo

I had a 2.8 TD Rodeo for work- it was a good motor not sure of fuel economy as i wasn't paying for it. Then i had a 3l TD hilux which was also pretty good (not as economical as current model). I'm a hilux man myself(2006 d/cab diesel) but if you want a cheaper ute i would lean towards the 2.8 TD rodeo. We also had the first of the 3l Rodeos at work- had a lot of trouble with the electronic 4wd selector, and they would overheat in hot weather.

Six of one.. Half a dozen of the other

The age you are talking about is such that whichever way you go you are looking at risk. I drive a Land Rover mate and it's a fantastic car. People will however rubbish the crap out of me and point me to issues which any other vehicle will encounter regardless. In my decision making process I try to look at the owner record and see if they did spend some time and money maintaining the vehicle. I ALWAYS get an independant vehicle check prior to purchase. Don't rely on a car dealer vehicle inspection report. Maintaining a 4WD is expensive so the resale value of something that age is not good. Shop hard and negotiate even harder.

So far as Navaras are concerned, same scenario mate. My Brother bought one as new and has had nothing but problems with it to the extent where he will next be in court. Having said that however I know lots of people who are very happy with them.

Agree with you on that one

Agree with you on that one Vince. They are all much a muchness nowadays. Definately servicing records kept up to date and fleet vehicles have usually been thrashed by idiots that couldn't give a shit. Most of the newer ones have excellent towing capacity. I have a new Triton and reckon it's mint but I know guys that have bought them and had nothing but trouble with steering column issues, squeeky arse ends etc. I'd be looking for one still under warranty to give you some degree of comfort.
