NAVIONICS MAPS ON IPADS

JUST WONDERED IF ANY MEMBERS HAVE DOWN LOADED THE NAVIONICS MAPS TO I PAD THE ONE THAT COST $70-80. IS IT THE SAME THAT YOU GET WHEN YOU BUY A SOUNDER/GPS UNIT . THE REASON I ASK IS THAT I HAVE A LOWRANCE COMBO AND IT WOULD BE HANDY.TO LOOK AT THE MAPS ON I PAD & LEAVE THE COMBO UNIT ON SOUNDER. CHEAPER THAN BUYING A 2ND UNIT.

I think it is worth it
plus you can save your waypoints to a cloud of some sort on it.
I find it useful, and I think have Iphone it works on both. Always handy to have a back up when you are on the water.
It is similar quality to purchased cards I think - not absolutely sure, but have to zoom in first when in wifi/ 3G/4G range.

I had a look at that, but
I had a look at that, but IMHO, I find there is enough stuff to handle on the boat without nursing an I pad. I bought the waterproof sleeve off ebay, loaded navionics trial version for the 1st week free trial, on my Samsung Tab 4 and tried that, but the tablet is to fragile for using on the boat or mounting permenantly and I decided to go back to the Combo unit, as it is a fixed unit, waterproof, and works fine - I use the full navigation view for going out to the destination, and when I see it is a fairly safe area, go onto the split view, when anchored, go to fishfinder only..
The tablet did not work well through the waterproof cover either..
Maybe if you had a second person managing the tablet it would be fine, but mine does not have 3G, so I canned the idea on the first trip.. Maps seem to be pretty good though, better than a navionics silver card for twice the price...
Nice idea would be if you could download those maps to any GPS or combo unit, as the navionics cards are pretty pricey..
Cheers,

I use it all the time. My old tinny had a small hummingbird combo unit, bought a lifeproof case and sat the ipad behind the hummingbird, the large screen was great plus it didnt draw power from my single battery. Have since upgraded to a bigger boat but still use the ipad next to my lowrance hds5, its convenient having a touch screen plotter at a fraction of the cost for a brand name equivalent, which does just as good a job, while leaving the lowrance set to sounder

I use it. Couple of points....
same charts you get with navionics cards for plotters
not the best if in full sunlight, even on full brightness. Fine in some shade.
chews the battery IF on all the time. Even plugged in to a 2.1amp charger struggles to keep up.
stores max 200 waypoints.
Dont need reception, just download maps before while in coverage.
Sonarcharts are awesome.

I have the maps on my iphone
I have the maps on my iphone and a gps combo unit on the boat,
if you have a large boat or a way to keep it dry the maps on the ipad are brilliant,
but if you have a smart phone the $14 is probaby a better choice as with a lifepoof case, your phone is instantly a hanheld navionics gps which is brilliant when fishing with mates.
The gps combo unit is more accurate and easier to read though.
