Need expertise from a Plumber
Submitted by Buz on Mon, 2012-02-27 21:56
Need advice from a Plumber to do with what appears to be wetness getting in behind the paint on the wall of bathroom and laundry(they are back to back so share the same wall) and is seemingly making paint bubble. I am half wondering if it is the bathroom pipes in the wall that may be leaking??????
Would greatly appreciate it if anyone with this sort of expertise could come have a look and tell me what it is or isnt.
Live in Morley.
Thanks Buz.

I'm not a plumber but.....
Could be one of two things.
Broken roof tile and aftermath of some rain with delayed effects...... Unlikely if single wall.
Otherwise turn off all taps and don't flush the loo (unless you really have to )
Get a reading from your water meter... leave it for an hour or so and check again.
If the reading increases sounds like you definately have a leak somewhere so "yep a plumber will be required"

Hey mate have been a tiler
Hey mate have been a tiler for 5 years and more recently started plumbing. I would say most likely it's damp getting through your shower to the otherside of the wall. Is the shower on the otherside of where the problem is?Normally it's only a leaking pipe if you can hear a hissing sound. Megaseal is a company that will come out and seal your shower or you can buy a grout scratcher from bunnings and scratch out the vertical corner grout joint and the wall/floor grout joint and seal with some good silicone that's the cheaper option. Good luck anymore questions just pm me mate

how old is the house. the
how old is the house. the reason i ask ,if its an old house it is most likely the shower if thats where the leak is. firstly you need to check for water leeks as mentioned, if none then the tile grouting is most likely the blame. however, has there been any excess water spillage in the laundry ?. got to check all options before you start destroying the shower recess. had that prob a while back and ended up being the laundry trough as the culprit

get your plumber to pressure test it
get your plumber to pressure test your water plumbing, sealer is a cheap fix if you dont pressure test your plumbing first, more like a band aid over a deep cut, seen this problem in several houses, especialy doing a termite inspection, moisture attracts termites aswell, also scraping out the grout and resealing will never fix your moisture problem, best to get your plumbing pressure tested to be sure, copper does corrode believe it or not,i have also done a few bathroom renovations aswel

If a leaking pipe
The resultant damage and retiling will be generally covered by insurance but if a simple breakdown of your shower grouting the insurance will not respond

Cheers for the advice and
Cheers for the advice and ideas of what it may be guys. Dont really like messing around putting 'bandaids' on problems personnally as i just know they will come back and bite me on the arse, so think i will go the option of getting a Plumber/Tiler in to check it all out and if need be rip everything out and start new. We were looking at renovating our bathroom sometime next year anyway as we redid our kitchen last year. Guess i might just be redoing the bathroom this year then!
Oh yeah was a single brick wall and it seems the wetness on the laundry side of the wall is in line with the shower taps/soap holder on the otherside. House is oldish built 1973. Interestingly the floor is also only compacted earth with a thin layer of concrete(50mm) with tiles set onto it, which sounds strange but it was what our toilet floor was like and the tiler which redid our toilet said it was common for houses built cheaply back then to not have a concrete pad in the wet areas of the house.

had this problem a few months
had this problem a few months back called plumber out he changed the plugs or seals inside the taps cant remember the name, the brass stopper lookin gizmo. charged us 200 bucks walked out smiling far to much. stripped the paint back in the room backing onto the shower and gave it a month to dry out, got some sealer from bunnings repainted wall sweet as. sometimes its just that simple. look for the simply fix first in my opinion.
