You get what you pay for
IMO...It's 17 years old so many things are at end of life I would suggest. The fuel consumption would be quite/very high and if anything does break down it will cost you a fortune to fix. 17 years of ownership determines the likelihood of extended life. What has it been through? Do accurate service records exist and is there proof of purchase for consumable items such as timing gear, diffs, gearbox etc.... You get my drift.
Sorry to put a slightly negative spin on this but you only get hurt when the mother breaks down.

GXL
Kempy, I've got a 96 GXL 4.5 petrol auto - no gas.
Purchased it for $10k 4 years ago.
Since I turned it into a tourer and use it to tow the boat & general run around.
I've replaced the motor with a wreckers about 14 months ago and I suspect the other motor was busted when I purchased but it ran for a good while anyway. Wreckers motor fitted $4500 three days before I was due to go on holidays xmas 2008, spent a squillion on putting lotsa 4x4 bits on it, but that was the plan in the beginning.
I'm either going to have the old motor rebuilt / gen 3 it with a commodore V8 or Brunswick Diesel the old girl. I want to keep the car as it rides well, parts are cheap and plentyful, it's big, tows the boat etc.
Finally if it sinks/ swims/ or other, it's cost me probably $30 k for a really good 4x4 with all the fruit not $50 for stock standard newby.
It is a bit heavy on the fuel at times but I can live with that for the returns I get from the vehicle.
horses for courses. hope this helps.
You could probably get a GXL Brunswick Diesel convert with a 6.5 litre uses about the same fuel or perhaps less than the petrol for between $13k and $15K. something to think about.

i would leave it
i would leave it if its had the new head and trans rebuild, purely because their better stuff on the market, it could be thrashed if it needed these things done, if you go for it, check no knocking noises, oil is right colour, coolant colour and no leaks,
if you put a big powerful v8 in it make sure the diffs and drive shaft can take the extra load

97 petrol and gas
Hi Kempy
Ive had mine since new and put the gas on 4 years ago,it now has 270000klm on it and goes as strong as the day i bought it. The gas option is great and extends the range as they put a 92 litre tank in.I alway drive around on gas and tow my 7 metre fibreglass boat all the time.Very few problems with it but check for oil leaks along the tranfer case as they can do rear seals. Very capable car and there still bloody popular in the pilbara.A few mates have the brunswick, pretty happy with them ,you should be able to run them on a gas deisel dual fuel.

In tha same boat
Yo Kempy,
I am also looking for tha same type of vehicle dude. Let me know what you decide to do. My price range was gonna be somewhere between 10-20K and I was asking all tha same questions you are. I have never owned a 4 x 4 so I don't know really what to look for. It is starting to become difficult carrying everything on my motorbike and a wheelie with a tackle box on tha handlebars just doesnt look cool anymore.
