Never tried it....

Never tried jigging, and would like to give it a go without spending a truck load of money.  I have got a 6' spinning rod that will have a abu garcier cardinal 44 reel (just a cheapie) with 7-8 kg braid...  will that suffice if i get some jigs and if so what weight should I be getting?  I also have a heavy duty boat rod with a shimano tld25 and 24kg braid if you think that might be better.  and then what should I actually do to catch a fish???

I've got a 5m runabout that, on a good day will reach direction bank, rottnest or out deep south of perth.  i also fish shark bay in the gulfs, up to 11 mts, and steep point trolling and bottom bouncing in 20-30 mts.

Probably the best

Probably the best starter-species is sambos, you can finesse it from there. Neither rod sounds that appropriate, and certainly forget the light one for sambos!

what sort of length and

what sort of length and weight of rod is a good starting point?  I reckon I saw some sambos under the boat when we were in about 10 m of water on five fathom bank recently.  decent size fish with yellow forked tails.  but had no rig to target them.

My most frequently used

My most frequently used jigger is a PE4 combo with a rod thats about 5'2", I have a 15lb jigger as well, a bit longer at 6'2", then down to 5' for the heavy one.

I mostly jig overhead, have a look at the gear in my profile for an idea on combos.

i'd go to a tackle shop and ask what they can do for you. i think the shimano spheros is a good reel to start with, on a jin-nor or shimano tcurve. just remember not to high stick the rod because it will probably snap. (high stick= lifting the rod over 45 degree angle while hooked onto a fish)

Again, that depends

Sat, 2011-09-17 09:21

on what species your targeting and what type of structure your fishing around.

For demersals (Dhuies, Snapper etc.) around small structure pe2-3 is a good start. Around more rugged structure i'd look more towards pe3-4 for stopping power and the possibilty of hooking a Sambo.

For Sambos/YTK Ambers and the like i'd be looking more pe3-4 for shallower stuff up to pe6-8 for the barges or deepwater structure.

Cost is unlimited but personally most of my outfits come in around $500 inc. line. Though budget has restricted me to this.

 as a start i'd go a spheros

Fri, 2011-09-16 22:04

as a start i'd go a spheros 8000 or something that would hold at least 250m of 50lb braid. iv been jiggin in the 100's off perth recently and landed 2 sambos around 30-40lb but the sharks are already around the usual sambo spots out there. iv landed 2 fish and been sharked 6 times
