New 4 cyl car which can tow a boat?
Submitted by BradG on Mon, 2013-12-16 00:08
Hi guys,
I'm looking at purchasing a new/near new car which can tow a 15 foot aluminium boat without brakes (unsure of weight). Budget is around 15k. I like the Mazda3 but am not sure if it will be able to cope over time even though I saw someone towing a 15 or 16 foot fibreglass boat with it (may of had brakes). I'd prefer a 4 cylinder to save money on fuel going to work and back.. If anyone knows of a car which fits this description, let me know! Thanks, Brad.

My mrs had an 05 crv, towed
My mrs had an 05 crv, towed our 15ft runabout no worries. We took it to Kalbarri with the car loaded with fridge and camping gear (including roof basket that had the cabin tent, chairs, matteresses and sleeping bags on, and we were overtaking slug diesel caravan towers doin 90 no probs. Threw a set of king springs in the rear (factory ones sag) and she was a beaut. Even dragged off my mates 79 series v8 td cruiser when we had all the gear packed for campin (no boat), and hit the beach with it no wories, plenty of grunt. These vehicles have issues with the aircond, other than that are a good car. Most late model 4 bangas will tow the boat, the big thing is, alot of people dont have the trailer set up right and there is too much down weight on the towball. A boat that size, you should be.able to pick the draw bar up and move it no worries, so move the axle back if its too heavy, will be a lot easier and safer to tow. As for the Mazda 3, good cars all round, rarely have issues (Im a mechanic), maybe look for an SP23 that has more grunt. Avoid shit, even if you know you can get a later model for your money, like kia, hyundai, holden (rebadged daewoo or opel), and Im not a fan of alot of others lol. Just check for towbar availability and towing capacity before you purchase
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Stick to a 2nd hand all wheel
Stick to a 2nd hand all wheel drive or 4x4 mate.. Just to be safe.. Plenty of 4 cylinders ones out there...
or even a Subaru outback or forester would be better than a 323..
sometimes the ramps are very slippery when tide is out and you will want the extra drive from the wheels.

Shit yeh
Go a Subi forester or outback/liberty. You will appreciate the 4x4. However I am a subi fan, and have been for yrs. The only worry I have is that compared with other 4cyls it does chew just a little more fuel IMO with the boxer. My fuel economy in the Rex I have is roughly the same as my Turbo diesel Cruiser??? Perhaps a little less.

Camry
Rob, I used to tow my 14 1/2 ali with a Camry that I bought as an ex fleet vehicle with 40,00kms for $15k. The front wheel drive was good on the crap ramps as the wheels stayed out of the water. They are a good car (go to Africa and you see them getting flogged all day every day and just keep going) with excellent fuel economy.

I have a 2.8 turbo desiel rodeo at the moment
that has been great for me. Cheap to run and reliable. Easy to work on myself. A bit gutless on the hill, but is to be expected from an older car with a load on it.

most cars
with a 2.0 l or bigger engine should have no problems with towing a 14-15 foot ali boat, I used to tow a 15 ft glass boat with a 2.0 Camira. Your problem will be finding one that is rated to tow your unbraked trailer depending on what your boat/trailer weighs. The latest Mazda 3 will only legally tow 500 kg unbraked and you'll find most family cars, even a Camry, will be similarly rated. A Rav 4 or Honda CRV might give you 600 or 750?

Wouldn't front wheel drive
Thanks for the replies.
Wouldn't front wheel drive suffice for the newer ramps? Are there any legal issues with towing over your rated capacity? All I'm concerned about is the brakes, clutch and drivetrain wearing out quicker from the load. I've looked at Subaru's before but heard they have more issues and parts are a lot dearer. Not sure about the weight of the boat when it's loaded either. Anyone know how much an older (1985~) Stacer Seamaster hull weighs?

my Camira
was front drive and the only time I had a little trouble was on the Coode st boat ramp which was covered in sand. With one person pushing at the back I got out no worries.
Never had any problems apart from that, ranging from Albany as far as Jurien and many ramps in between.
As for legal issues, you're only legal up to the car manufacturer's limits, though a fine would not worry me as much as insurance. If you're not legal your insurance is likely to be void. And lastly, your average runabout on a trailer from 14 or so ft up would be likely to be well over 500 kg, though you might well squeeze in under the 750?

At a guess your boat
would be about 700kg BMT. I had a 17 ft glass centre console with a 75 that weighed 1 tonne loaded if that's any help. That was BMT.

Oh yeah insurance would
Oh yeah insurance would definitely be worrying. Geeze, 1 and a half tonnes behing a 3 cylinder, that guy must be mad. I'm still keen on the Mazda 3 and found a good deal on one (11k for a 2010 model). Maybe I'd be better off getting brakes for my trailer or a new trailer all together? Anyone know how much brakes would cost for a 15' trailer?
