New beach land based game setup

Afternoon all,

After seeing everyone's recent shark catches, I've decided to get in on the action.

Taking advantage of Motackle's 20% off of all rods this weekend, I'm ordering a Daiwa Sensor Surf 10-20 kg overhead rod...... figure you can't go wrong with that rod for a $199.

I already have a Daiwa Saltist 50 2 speed lever drag, has anyone had any experience in trying to cast these lever drags on the beach? I would love to get a second use out if this particular reel if possible, although I am a newby to casting overheads.

Advice I have received so far is that a star drag reel like the Shimano Torium or Daiwa Saltist Black Gold would be a far better option. Can anyone add anything to that?

Also looking for some advice in terms of which mono line to use. Was going to put a 300M of 50lb braid backing on first, then topshot with a 24kg mono. Any suggestions? Was looking at the Berkley Trilene big game 24kg.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Simmo

ld cast more difficult but you"ll be fine.

You will have overwinds.

Spool with 40lb braid (500m) and about 200m mono.

use 15-18kg mono. Plenty. with a 11ft rod you'll struggle to break it with a locked drag in the saltist. Thinner lines also cast easier because thick line reduce the spool diameter which cause it to speed up. Very diffult to control then.

Remove the shaft bearings, clean with carb cleaner, dry and oil with ver thick oil. Will help to slow the spool down.

learn to cast down wind with 5oz weight. too light sinker is difficult. Don't try pendulum casts. you'll break the rod.

cast like you would hit a wall with a sledge hammer and let go at 11 position.

Big game is a good line but difficult to cast. Ask for a more supple line from your dealer. Enjoy

Thanks for the advice gents.

I'll try spooling the saltist up with mono first and having a crack at casting in the local park. I suppose its worth a shot before buying another overhead.

Any recommendations on the brand of the 15-18kg mono Sharktale? There are soooo many the choose from, would like to get the selection right first time if possible.
