Its great you caught fish to take home. Fishing can sometimes be as you discribed at times, there are few things you can try to do to increase future catches.Look at what other fisherman are doing, find out what is different, ask questions. Be freindly and you will find most shore based fisherman will give you some advice. Bait, rigs, line weight play a big part on who is and who is'nt catching fish. Keep fishing as often as you can, time spent actually fishing is invaluable and will pay dividends. One tip I can give you is to watch your fishing line, there nealy always a bow in your line from the rod tip to where the line enters the water. You will see this alter and start straighten out as a fish takes the bait. The tug tug of the bite comes after this starts happening allowing you to strick earlier, with practice this will increace the amount of fish you catch. Remember, have fun its what its really all about.

 Mainline wont make too much

Mainline wont make too much of a difference, but using a light mono or fluorocarbon leader will definitely increase the amount of bites you get 99% of the time. More important than the line you use though is the bait.
