at the end of the day it's just a GPS also depends if you want c map or navonics

one thing to check is zoom range i know my old dinasour use to zoom within 0.2nm my current one zooms in to 20m which helps to anchor on small bombies but sometimes a pain in the **** driving around in circles(within a meter or 2) trying to get the perfect drop

Garmin 740, can get cheap

Garmin 740, can get cheap now, really good and intuitive touch screen. Get a 1 kw sounder for free as backup to the furuno (not as good as the furuno sounder).

Garmin

I have been looking at the garmin 700 series they are a bit out of my price range however money will stretch that far if need be. My main concern is not the sounder but the maps are the base maps any good or will I have to upgrade to Bluechart g2 as that is another $400 I could spend elsewhere. Very interested to here your thoughts.

i'ld prob just go a lowrance or what ever was cheapest as long as it showed a safe passage on the chart for the places you fish or the ones on your wish list and mark the spots of interest

if you end up going to the higher price bracket consider the simrad nss7 , it's been idiot proof enough that even i can operate it and if you ever upgrade your tube the options are endless (radar , auto pilot ect)

I would possibly go for a lowrance however I have not had good experiences from them they may well have picked up there game however I don't think I will buy one again. I will probably end up with a garmin and upgrade to the BlueChart g2 maps.

If just GPS nothing wrong

If just GPS nothing wrong with Lowrance. With the Garmin, not sure how good the base map is, mine was a US model, G2 maps about $170.

Garmin 750s

Tue, 2013-09-03 21:24

Mate i would have a garmin 750s on my boat right now if the funds permited it. I have used a mates and the maps are great show all the channels, shoals, reefs and has a bright touchscreen display for 900 bucks i dont think you could go wrong. I have also heard the dragonfly's are a great unit with the new chirp sounder however i am yet to use one.
