New Spinning Reel
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2016-06-12 19:29
Howdy all, I'm looking to buy a new spinning reel, something in the 3500 - 4000 size, for breaming and light fishing, using 10 - 12lb line max. Looking for something in the $250 - $300 range. What's out there that you can recommend?

Personally
if you like Shimanos get a Stradic FK. I had an FJ and the FK is massively improved reel.
I have a 5000 and have thrashed it over the last 5/6 months and it hasn't missed a beat.
Also know a few crew who have 4000's and 3000's and theirs have been great too.
I wouldn't hesitate in buying another

Yep my young fella has a Ci 4k + Stradic very light reel but it can handle the action. He's cranked up some hard fighting Sambo's and Dhuies with it.

Got the Ci4000 and Ci2500. The 2500 loaded with 12lb braid has caught everything from sand whiting to 10kg+ sharks.
Love how light they are, you can cast and jig all day with them.

I've got the 3000 and 5000 FK Stradic, awesome reels. 3000's running 8lb and has handled salmon up to 6kg flawlessly land based over the last couple of weeks

For bream and light fishing
I would be using a 2500 size reel. The stradic's are definitely a great bang for buck reel but if you can get your hands on a cerate I would rate them over the stradic's.
Currently run a 2500 on pe2 and work it hard on the 3 mile with snappers and sambo's, also caught salmon and tailor on it too. Deadly little reel.

Love the Stradics aswell
But in your $$ range is the next level up on the Stradic, namely the Sustain. This little black beauty I truly love.
Started with the 2500FG, now have 2, and a 1000, and 2 4000s.
Covers almost all the fishing I do down here in the SW from YFW popping, light offshore to a little heavier offshore covered by the 4000s.

I would be very interested to know the exact differences between the Stradid FK, Biomaster and the Sustain, all similar reels around the same price point.
I have a FK 5000 as a backup for the missus as well. It's always my first recommendation in that price point.

if you read Alan hawks work
if you read Alan hawks work the extra bearing (s) are not worth the extra coin for the sustain over the stradic. Its in one of his reviews or blog posts somewhere but i do distinctly remember him mentioning it

I'm pretty keen to check out the FKs aswell they sound to be the goods! If you want to have a look at something different and bang for buck maybe the Quantum exo 15, I don't know what everyone else thinks but I've had the larger 25 for over a year and love it. decent line capacity, heaps of bearings, smooth drag etc. worth a look!

While the Sustain wass the Stradic FJ with more bearings and a higher price tag, the are charging the same amount for the Stradic FK, that was more my question. All over Alan Hawks articles, that guy is the man.

Got out and had a look at most of these today, liking the look of the FK's. Also liked the look of the ci4, felt nice and light and would be a good fit for my starlo stick. Back to work tomorrow, so that will give me a couple of weeks to make up my mind.

Looking for a good line now, 15lb Max, spiderwire or similar, must be good for casting.
