New steering system needed

The steering on my boat has been on the way out for a while. Now at the point where im nervous about using the boat, so ive decided that I need to get it replaced.
In the next year or two I'm planing to get a new outboard also. Curently have a 40 HP 2 stroke Mercury, Thinking about a 40 HP 4 stoke - maybe Suzuki. I was planning to do both at the same time but as ive said the steering now cant wait.
Im not very Mechanically minded. Is there any thing that i need to bare in mind now with the new steering?
ie Will a new steeing system that suits the current motor, likely be fine with the new motor?

Assuming that its cable
Assuming that its cable steering they do need some love every now and then. I have a 97 outboard which i recently pulled out the steering rods and gave them a very good clean and re-grease with Mercurys 2-4-C grease and it is better than it has ever been! Before that it was sticking/seizing all the time, now I can steer with one finger.
As far as steering systems go i'm fairly certain they are independant from the motor. i.e. If you replace your steering system (Cable/helm) the new outboard will still just bolt straight up.
A good clean and re-grease may be all it needs to get you through to new motor time

Thanks sstevee
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. Hopefully some re greasing will work. If not, its good to know that having a new system installed wont be a waste of money.
