Metro Winters Day - You Wont Believe This!!!
Out with Langa and Bodie today. Hopes of a deep drop were dashed with the fickle forecast so we stayed in shallower on a cold wet winters day…………I have to keep reminding myself this is Perth metro, middle of July………a fair few surprises today!
Day started with a couple of tailor being caught in the 40’s……..strange. A lot of bait around that had attracted the tailor, plus a few other toothy criters……this being my first Mac on jig and it went pretty well on my PE2 jig outfit. Yeeeeoooooooowww!
Tried for a dhuie on jig, but only landed a few just undersize dhu despite some great shows, so headed out a bit deeper into the 60’s and landed this on jig. Metro Winter Rankin Cod!!!!!!!!! Holy crap.
Well with all this strange shit happening, we decided to throw a few lures out for a troll, not something you normally do in Perth in winter, but what the heck, this was one weird day! Did not take long and a double hookup ended with one fish dropped and Bodie landing this nice mac. The man love was building by this stage!
Lures were straight back in with the mac still on the floor being bled and before we could get the fourth lure in we had a triple hookup. The third fish was dropped and as Langa dragged the lure back to the boat a mac smashed the lure in a spectacular surface strike……what a day!
The call went out for a Yellow Fin Tuna……why not! 10 minutes later…..hey presto. Well bugger me!
The new madfish fish bag was certainly christened and was absolutely chocker block full but did a great job of keeping the fish cold on the trip home prior to a marathon filleting session. Will have to take the larger madfish bag out next trip!
Dot think we will have a Metro Winter day like that again for a while.

We saw plenty of bait fish north and south of Rotto today but came up with bugger all from out there.

When we filleted it, it was
When we filleted it, it was VERY fatty, similar to most deep drop fish. A result of being a bit too cold I recon, a long way from home.
Flesh looked delicious!
Water temp was only 18 where we got the first mac!

Thanks for a great day out
Thanks for a great day out lads, was definitely a strange day including the weather, but with a healthy fish bag like that who would be complaining
started with tailor on jigs in 40m of water, only for john to pick a nice big Mack on his first drop of the day!!
3 way hookups sure are fun on the troll!
i can assure you, this was as metro as it gets! A long way from coral bay this for sure. But hey, who needs to go north!!
bring on the deep drop I say, who knows john with your luck a broad bill is probably on the cards!!!

Reporting catch
DoF have a site (can't remember the name right now) where they are seeking people who have caught fish out of the "normal" range for these fish. People are asked to report the catch.

Mate, those are some serious fish. If you caught them up North you would be stoked, but cacthing them metro is an amazing catch.
It's these posts that just cost me an awful amount of money upgrading my boat so I can get out of Cockburn Sound and chase something like this.. again, very well done you guys.

Right you southerners that's it, you have no further need to come into our northern backyard since you can catch them all down there. We will set up border patrols and block the highways of all northern towing boats anywhere north of Kalbarri.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
