Tassie tragedy

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the diver taken by reportedly great white shark in Tassie today.
The 7 news report said that the man was taken in front of his daughter, one can not imagine a worse situation. No doubt it will take a long time for her to recover from such an experience, if ever.

The way the story was reported I am lead to believe that a large GW had been seen in the area a day before the attack and the area is not noted as a hangout for sharks, this leads me to ask the bloody obvious question.

Was the sighting of the shark made widely known, was the beach closed. In an eastern states paper there was a report that a person had also had a close experience with a large shark in the near area.

It will be interesting to see when all the facts come out if these prior experiences with a large shark where widely made know so that people going into the water after scallops had information which could have made them think twice.

It appears to me that people who use the ocean a lot are not taking any responsibility for making it known to authorities or the general public via the media that they have seen one of the oceans apex predators in the area where they are swimming etc.

A quick phone call to the local tv or radio station along the lines of there is a bloody great big shark in such and such area could save a life,

who knows it could be one of your mates.

I have often wondered about shark spots and people's lack of willingness to give up fishing spots.

often there are stories of encounters with sharks on this yet the media only care when someone gets hit.

very unlucky. They haven't had an attack down there for donkeys.

Cold water, seals, and very remote. Quite a big rec fishery down there  too.  they are rarely seen an attack is even rarer.
