New Zealand Ranfurly banks trip November 2014

after 24 years in WA i finally escaped and ventured off to the land of the long white cloud with a bunch of keen fishos abourd Enchanter charters for their first trip of the season to Ranfurly banks.

ill just put my photos up as im not sure what the others are doing but bit of a run down on the trip, we had both boats Cova Rose and Enchanter and Aussies on Enchanter and the Kiwis on Cova. We where on a 5 day trip that we got 4 days that where fishable, well basicaly we smashed the Kiwis with all 7 of us boating a fish over 30 on jig and a fish over 20 on surface. biggest fish for the trip went 37kg Kingy, 38kg Puka some nice snapper and my freak dory from 180m on an 800g jig. each day we would of landed 100 fish from 5-30kg between us and had some absolute smokings by monsters. the surface action on the last day was awesome!! something truly amazing about watching packs of 20kg kingys chasing down your lure before eating it and pull againt full drag like its nothing!! ive never fished such heavy drags or caught fish that pound for pound pull as hard as they do!!

my best fish of the trip was a 33kg kingy on jig, 15kg puka from 140m and 23kg king on surface. i got about 15-20 fish over 20kg myself and 2 over 30. such hard work and the most physically demanding fishing i have done but one of the best experiences ive had

gear i used was a JM tornado M pe4-8 with a pe6 JM reel spooled with varivas 10x10 jigging pe5 line and 170lb shock leader, swage GT82 with a 5500 Expo spooled with varivas max power casting pe6 and 100lb shock leader with a tailwalk gunz stickbait doing all the damage on the surface fish for me.

Was live aboard and we drove 2-3 hours each way back to the mainland each day in a protected bay but up at 4am fishing by 7 then wouldn't leave the banks till 5/6pm so full days fishing each day. About 10 hours travel from where we set off at whakatane to the banks
