Not all passerbys are pingers!

My son, a mate and I were out fishing off Pt Gregory over the weekend. My son was driving why my mate and I were hanging a couple of lures off the back when my son asked what this other boat was doing.....when we looked he was coming in at about 45 degrees and getting closer and closer even when we changed course. The first thing I thought of was all the posts on here about pingers, people getting in the way of drifts and boats in general coming to close and getting abused!!!
When they got close enough to talk they were just wondering how we were going and what sort of day we were having.......when we told them we hadn't got anything yet...... they told us they had caught too many and asked if we would like a couple of Baldies!
So if you were one of those blokes on that boat......Thanks

We caught all sorts of things including a Cobia, Wrasse, Charlie Court and tons of bait fish but ended up with a Mackeral and Wrasse to take home ( plus your Baldies).
With your donation it gave us a nice feed to take home to the girls for dinner......Cheers!!!!

So to all those people who hate other boats in their vicinity.........next time, try giving them a wave and saying Gday you might find out they aren't all out to pinch your fish or grounds.

Cheers

About a 5.5m Westerberg......Beach launch.
Fairly easy in good weather with your tyres down. Just check the depth as some spots are better than others. an extension bar on your tow hitch would make it real easy.

Cheers

Two cars or a tractor would be better.... but pulling it out at Gero would be no problems.

I like the generosity, bit concerned about their catch ethics though.

Thought you were gonna say...

...it was actually a boat with the Swedish bikini models on board, needing some blokes to oil their bodies, like in "Dumb and dumber"!

Oh yeah, the "catching too many baldies" looks a bit sus...lucky they happened upon you before fisheries happened upon them! Might be more a case of nessicity then one of generosity!

It was a fairly big boat with a lot of blokes on-board, could have been an honest mistake.....better than throwing a dead fish back and us catching a couple more.......

Could also have been one that the last ones wouldnt go back down.

Legally wrong but morally right.

Agree hairyone.
Or most likely they catch the extra one, see its much bigger than those already on board so they show a bit of generosity.

Adam if he drove up to you would you accept it or not then.

Nothing wrong with a wave

Mon, 2014-01-27 15:41

Good story and I'd give the party the benefit of the doubt. Where I'm from everyone gives a friendly wave when travelling passed each other on the water. Here off Perth I reckon 1 in 3 wave back, which is a shame because when you're offshore everyone is your ally. You just never know when you'll need a hand. So much for being a large country town anymore!!

Geez that Gallash bloke is a trouble maker .. I'm more concerned you took some wrasse home lol .. Your hearts in the right place Hairy and traditionally most wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth . However these days it does beg the question unfortunately .

And yes, you could be concerned about their catch ethics, but it would be purely an assumption and I chose to assume it was an honest mistake.

I've found myself in a similar situation in the past with four of us on the boat and when we think we have reached quota we have found one extra, honest mistake, so the option becomes either throw one back and watch it float away, or give it to someone on the way back to the ramp.  I would always rather do the latter.

Regardless of the morals in this situation

Mon, 2014-01-27 18:10

I always wave and keep an eye out.  In now four trips since the new year I have had to help. I have towed in three boats, two dinghys and a catermaran that had broke its rig and the mast had come down.  Then last night as we returned to my parents yacht, after the fireworks and dinner on my uncles yacht, two dudes approached from the shore line.  They were quite pissed and their friends had had a lovers tiff and the girl swam out near the green channel marker off South of Perth Yacht club.  Now its about 0.8 of a metre for most of the 150 mts to the marker and only 1.8 for the rest, the girl had made it back to shore ok, but the bloke had swum out after her and noone had seen him since.

So I got the family out of the dinghy grabbed one of these fellas and handed him the spotty and headed out in a search near the marker.  After about 1/2 an hour of searching up wind and current of the persons last seen position we were signalled from my parents and returned to find the bloke had walked home and made contact with his friends.

Great relief for all and the dudes were thankful, but after telling me they had drunk about 3/4 of a bottle of vodka each I was a bit shitty they had let their friends go swimming at all, and in hindsight I should have left the bloke onshore or taken him and my old man out to search as he fell over in my boat many times at slow speed.

Anyway im hoping that the karma gods will repay me if I ever need help! PS, Im not a good enough fisherman to be worried about pingers, in my small boat I reckon anywhere I fish is fair game!

Well done SarcasmO. No one

Mon, 2014-01-27 19:04

Well done SarcasmO. No one likes pingers, however, when it comes to boating, safety is paramount. I have always been taught to keep an eye out when on the water.
When out wide I keep an eye on all the boats within visual range just in case they need assistance, similarly, I hope the same from them.
We once had a lone boater follow us out wide keeping a reasonable distance from our drift. I was tempted to go over and assure him he could follow us all day and we'd keep an eye out on each other. However, he ended up moving on to a working Cray boat, just as we bagged out.
