Occy traps

finally got around to making some occy traps with some bits and pieces I had laying around... first time trying this so will be interesting to see how they go. 6 x 100mm pipes over 25m, placing out this arvo so can't wait to see if they produce when I check them on my first day off (5 days from now)...

I hope you do well

I pulled up my cray pot this morning and all it contained were 2 very good size heads. Just as I got the pot onto the gunnel of the boat a big occy slithered out of the pot and back into the water.
Bugger, just how much can an occy eat in 1 night, it certainly had made a pig of it's self, 2 big crays in 1 night the bloody thing should have been as big as a pacific occy.

Hey roddo, plans were to get

Hey roddo, plans were to get them in the sound somewhere but it was a bit windy and rough for the wife. She never comes out in the boat so I was happy to drop them in the calmer waters of the estuary, hopefully next break I'll be able to move them if they don't produce.

I did have plans on painting

Thu, 2016-12-29 19:22

I did have plans on painting them but I ran out of time, I ended up putting in the estuary so hopefully the darker water will conceal them for the next 5 days. When I get a chance I'll bring them in and do as you mentioned

 100mm pipe

Fri, 2016-12-30 09:09

100mm pipe (I had lengths of off cuts so I've got 5 100m at 500mm and one 90mm at 800mm) I've got about 200mm of rapid set in the bottom. And nothing stops the occy from coming out. This is just a trial set I've made up. Just stand them up in a bucket or whatever with the rope tucked into each pot as per the pic above, drive along and just throw them over the edge of the boat. As mentioned darker rope and pots would be the go but I had that rope laying around doing nothing so I just used that.

 Checked the pots today and

Checked the pots today and nothing in them, although I did jag one with the grappling hook & dropped him boat side. Hook is way to light so I'll have to attach some weight to it, took 9 goes to snag the pots... as soon as you put tension on the rope the hook wants to lift instead of dragging even when done on the angle.

 If you're interested in

Mon, 2017-01-02 11:26

If you're interested in catching smaller occy (depending on what you're using them for) you can try using theaded tube with a screw cap. The non threaded end you put in the rapid set laying pipe on an angle leaving whatever size aperture you want at the back. This way if you leave a large hole you get a large occy, if you leave a small slit you get a small occy. When it comes time to remove your catch open the pot using the screw cap and touch the occy with a rag dipped in metho, it'll come screaming out into your bucket.

Hope that made any sense, and good luck

Make sure you put 1/4 inch

Mon, 2017-01-02 14:27

Make sure you put 1/4 inch hole at side near bottom for air to escape so they wont float, use table salt to remove ockies from pots raw salt stings there skin.

Any restrictions to how many pots per line?

Wed, 2017-01-04 09:24

 Hey guys,

is there any restriction to how many pots you have on one line? I have only ever potted diving on them but am keen to set up a line like anyfishwilldo. Also how many lines are you allowed out there per license? Cheers

Pretty sure the regs

Wed, 2017-01-04 09:32

Only relate to the trigger traps - don't think there are specific regs for shelter pots/traps. Only regs for them relate to quotas. Would be best checking fisheries website to confirm.
