offshore mulloway

After seeing that Jazz Charters hooked up to a school of mulloway recently , i was thinking of targeting them after the demersal closure.

Does anyone have any info regarding depths they school up in , are they spawning aggregations  or are they just a bycatch when fishing for dhuies etc.

Cheers Paul

They definitely aggregate out deep.

But I dont really know why. I've found good numbers of schooling fish in over 50 fathoms, but they were on a huge bait aggregation. An old wet liner up here used to target them, on a particular phase of the moon, ten mile or so offshore,  not done now. I do believe they are the same general mass of fish that you catch off the beach, because a mate tagged one off the beach north of Kalbarri, and it was recaptured wide of Jurien.

Caught a couple on the barges out behind Rotto in late spring I recall a fair while ago and I seem to remember them being caught off Jurien in a State Boats comp. Some of the guys at the MAAC mentioned they are sometimes in poor condition, however the ones I've seen were in good nick and tasted fine.                            Regards, John

Could be a bit of a tricky one targeting them as the method would be very similar to demersals. Fisheries might have an issue with that.

I suppose that's a good area to start , deeper water around the barges and wrecks.

I heard just off the shipping channels in the sound is good too.

Little johnny what's the bait you usually use for them , live herring ,whiting ?
