ok So off to try a new spot in Canning tomorrow... what do people think on soft plastics/bait to use (see pic)

This is my soft plastic supply, an a bream hook/sinker rig

So what do people think,  upper Canning river. I was thinking Soft plastics, maybe the madeyes, as the bait I have been getting latly from the tackelshops just falls apart soon as it thaws... The Prawns dont seem to  hold together at all on hook.

The running sinker rig I have a feeling is a snag waiting to happen.... up there. My only trouble now is, if I use soft plastics Ic ant get heads in em for shit lol... I tried 10 grubs last night, an tyjhe hooks actually ended up comign 0out asides an tails, an anywhere els but where they meant to be LOL....

The Madeyes are hell to hook up, as th ey are really tough an keep twisting soon as you put the hook in....The home made ones on left, are really sweet to  rig up, but untested by me yet. Though others have caught on them.

So comments, suggestions, abuse.....

PS, was at Henry bridge at Applecross ??....this morning under it, an the schools of BB were huge feeding off musles on piers....Spoke to an old guy been there every single day for 30 years... he says hes never seen so many in the canning as this year. Sadly I couldnt catch one....

edit

These hookis I got today ater seeing em on a show caleld "The Water" in WA.... he said they work great... But after getting home I remembered he was using mussles... SO I dont know if they will work for Prawns or not.

Don't use the plastics as artificial bate mate. You need to rig them up on a jig head and work them so they look like an injured fish or a grub being swept by the current.

Get yourself some of these http://www.ttlures.com.au/product.php?id=230 and then hold your plastic against it to see where the hook should come out and thread the hook down the plastic. The plastic should sit straight on the hook without being bunched up to allow the best action.

To work the plastic you cast it out and take up the slack and watch the line until it goes slack again, flick your rod tip up (single flick or little flick followed by a bigger flick), reel in the slack and repeat until you have a fish or you have to cast again.

Jack, yer i know mate....:) I was jsut showing my selection... I suck at rigging the jigheads but I am getting there... Gonna use 1/16  in upper canning I think. Is that true about using suppermarket prawns, or you just messing with me? :)

Prawns

Sun, 2015-03-08 09:23

Go the supermarket of fishmongers prawns. Get as fresh as possible which usually means Aussie caught.

I havent bought bait prawns for over 10 years now. They are just the scrapings from the factory floor.

Throw away the suicide hook too, buy some bait keeper hooks. They will present prawns much better and chemically sharpened hooks will hook up better. Go black swivels, brass ones flash too much light about.

I have bought king prawns for bluebone before, for the same reasons as you mentioned Tassy. Its worth buying the better quality stuff. Don't be conned into buying the already "thawed for your convenience" rubbish, ask for frozen and keep them frozen until 1 minute before you use them.
keep working on the softies !

Do people  still dig for bloodworms

when I was younger my old man used to take us down river at low tide dig for them. 1/3 ice cream container full would be enough for a days fishing. then would go back at high tide to fish. one of best baits for bream imo

Tassy, tassy, tassy....

Sun, 2015-03-08 11:43

...you need someone to actually sit down with you and demonstrate how to rig a softie! It's not hard, even with the tougher materials like you find in the Zmans etc. Even a quality tackle store would show you how. Explaining it on here just isn't as effective.

The other things to remember when using softies include making sure the weight of your jighead and length of your plastic suit each other AND the depth/conditions. Also important to have a sensitive rod, braided line, and good quality mono or FC leader, and to make sure the braid to leader join is a proper knot....the simpler ones are the back-to-back uni, Albright, and slim beauty...something tells me you may not be doing this? Again, tackle shops or someone on here who's convenient could help you out...maybe organise to meet someone at a fishing spot...would love to help if you come fishing down Mandurah/Rocko way!

na I use Albright no worries

Sun, 2015-03-08 11:38

na I use Albright no worries at all, ... I use swivels, as wlel as the braid to fluro.

My line is the really thin black stuff Oceanside put on for me when I bought the rod (2-4kg) so thats all sorted. 6-8 lb fluro for leader... I jsut sit down while watching telly an keep hooking the softies.... its jsut poractice an yes it isnt hard... watched a few vids on it...Just cant seem to get past the damn things twisting on me an hooks either dont go in far enough or coem out side... ill get it:)...
