outboard servicing and VHF installation???

just got a new vhf marine radio and was wondering if its a good idea to put it in yourself or get a proffesional job done and also my guy that services my johnson 115hp outboard is out of town for 2 months and need to get it done. anyone got any suggestions for a reasonably priced but quality service(dont want a cheap but dodgy service at all).

With the VHF why not fit it yourself? The new one should have an in line fuse fitted to the power lead, you can connect this wire through a switch if you prefer, [most do] straight to the main positive wire from the battery and the other wire[usually black] to the negative lead.

Situate the aerial as far as you can away from any other radio aerials already there for the best reception and performance.

Cannot help you with the service but no doubt someone will.

Make sure you solder all the joints for the electrics

and use shrink wrap (even a bit of liquid electrcial tape doesnt go astray...fantasic stuff) .

Just installed my VHF in (lowrance LVR880) and was very simple process.

I ran mine straight from battery as i wanted a seperate power cable for it in case something shat itself elsewhere for some reason. Plus you know exactly what the power line is down the track so if there is an issue you can isolate it.

If running power from battery get yourself the cable from whitworths (about $2/m 10amp which has both red and black wire in white wrap case total $10 for 5m ) and a switch for about $8.

Dont twist the joins and wrap in tape. Might not get wet direct ly but after a while the moisture can get in and last thing you want is for the VHF to crap itself.

Re mechanic , try Jason Chandler 0407428438 . Mobile Service and has been doing my boat for a while and others on this site I believe.

He services outboards around the rocking ham area, comes to your house and does it. Very good price,I would not recommend the idiot at rocking ham boats (the one just off dioxin rd)near the caltex.
