Outrigger opinions

Hi all with gamefishing time around the corner and for me the annual gamex trip I want to set up the new boat with outriggers.

my boat is an American tub, a century 2400 walk around. It came over with taco grand slam outrigger bases on the hard top that accept a 1.5 inch or 38mm rigger pole.

i will be fishing for sailfish and black/blue marlin running 24  and maybe 37 in the future from the riggers.

my options are as follows:

i can get the taco telescopic poles that fit into the bases. The problem is that I have heard they aren't very stiff which is a downside for marlin fishing.I have also been told that only the metal poles will fit in these bases not sure if anyone else can shed some light on this?

Another option is to get new bases like the reelax wishbone 450 bases off the side of the cabin with matching 5.5m poles. Has anyone had any experience with the solas outrigger systems? I know this will be a more expensive option but will have this boat for a fair few years to come and will be doing quite a few marlin missions.

Sorry for for all the questions hope someone can answer a few for me.  Thanks guys

sammy.

I would double check to make

Mon, 2013-10-21 08:18

I would double check to make sure that only the ally riggers fit. I've used the taco ally telescopics and they were rubbish. Much too soft. By contrast a mate has the telescopic glass ones and they are fine.

Stuart from Precision does some fantastic Carbon riggers. He would point you in the right detection too.

 Hi dodgy. Even if glass

Mon, 2013-10-21 10:07

Hi dodgy. Even if glass poles for in my bases the max size is only 38mm of te opening. Which would mean I would need a pole of around 36mm diameter which no one makes :(

cut them

Mon, 2013-10-21 10:22

Sammy, had the same problem with my bases. Got a set of telescopic glass poles, took them to a certain tacklestore, and they cut them down to suit. only lost about 400 mm overall length. Just another option for you.

Good idea rick. What bases

Mon, 2013-10-21 10:27

Good idea rick. What bases did you have on yours? Someone told me as there is a pin that  notches in the Ali poles. You could only use them. Keen to know how  others have overcome this problem

I had a set of Lees T Top bases and i think they were around 38mm internal as well. I didnt need to pin them at all.

 Ok. Just went and double

Mon, 2013-10-21 16:35

Ok. Just went and double checked and the bases my mate has are only 29mm. I thought they were glass but they are actually anodised black ally with gold trim. These ones are ok compared to the sloppy ally ones I had used previously.

 Thanks mate much

Mon, 2013-10-21 18:49

Thanks mate much appreciated. I have been suggested another option today. Get some reelax t topper bases which around $700 and matching poles ,reelax or escapin ones which are about half price, and run them off the hardtop and just sacrifice the old ones and leave them on there. I went and checked out the wishbone type bases today and am pretty sure that they won't clear between the cabin wall and the bow rail do that option is out.
