Overoiling
Submitted by davidbland50 on Fri, 2011-09-30 20:53
Hi everyone, Hope someone can advise me what could be wrong with my 150hp johnson 1993 2 stroke. Starts fine at home, runs ok until warm and then starts overoiling out thru the prop. Yes it is a VRO and no I dont want to disconnect it. Any help would be appreciated. A friend of mine suggested I should wait till I get her in the water and take it for a good long run, does this sound right?

johnson
I know their not a site sponser but when I was having problems with my Johnson the guys at Boat city were spot on in repairing it where other reputable boat mechanics failed. They used to be the Johnson reps apparently so they know their stuff

oiling
Like strike zone says they are renown for over oiling, I understand you dont want to disconnect your oil injection thats up to you but when I removed mine and just premixed it ran alot better with less smoke. apparently the amount of oil they inject is a bit random

Pressure build up
Its building up pressure in the oil resevoir and forcing it through to the carby and into the cylinders and out the exhaust while its parked up. All you need to do is check the air vent hole in the cap is clear or put a new hole in it.

Hole where?
Are you talking about the filler cap in the oil reseroir? And what, just check it is clear?

Cap
Should be a hole in the oil resevoir filler cap and it has to be clear.
Also, do not run carbies out of fuel when you shut it down because the oil doesn't shut off and you end up with near straight oil in them causing plugs to oil up when you go to start up on the next trip.

To all those that assisted me
To all those that assisted me with this problem, thankyou very much. The engine now runs quite smoothly, smokes a bit but what do you expect from a 2 stroke. The overoiling has stopped and she started up almost instantaneously from cold, if you dont count the five minutes wasted forgetting to put the deadmans switch in! Also, found out from my neighbours owners manual, that the electric choke is push in type located on the keyswitch. Having never had a OMC outboard before, it is a big learning curve.
