Owner hooks.....FAIL

Hey guys just a heads up

I was using a stickbait/popper today that Sherbert lent to me.  He had put some owner trebles on in about the 3/0 size I think they are called sExtreme.

Anyway fourth cast in hooked up on a nice tailor about 400mm and after a short tussle on the surface the hooks pulled as they sometimes do.

I wound it in and noticed straight away that 2 of the barbs on the trebles had been straightened out by the fish and therefore it got off.

According to the rep this "happens".

Anyway anyone using small owner trebles should check them at home first as it looks like they arent up to scratch, never had this problem with other brands, most of my lures use VMC 3xstrong in various appropriate sizes and are pretty tight

btw before anyone asks i was using 30lb braid and NO I wasnt skull dragging the fish, I release most of my tailor to catch another day

just check if you have them, could be a bad batch.  Owners other styles of hook seem to go ok with the jigging etc

What "x" rating were the hooks? If they are only light gauge hooks then yeah that would be why. Put on a set of heavy duty or xxx owners and i dint think you will have the same problem.

here that herbie, what x rating were they??

30lb line aside my rod is not heavy, suits light poppers and I certainly wasnt high sticking it.  A herring would straighten one of those particular hooks at whatever xrating it is so I dont know what species/lure they would be good for

 I have light guage owner

Fri, 2011-09-23 19:15

I have light guage owner trebbles on my herring metals, took one out today and was bringing in 600-700mm yellow tail kingies on my herring gear with them without a single issue. As you suggest it is probably more a batch issue. I will however have a look before I put any more on my rigs, Thanks for the heads up, nothing sucks as bad as gear not holding up when you have a good fish on the other end.

They certainly look like finesse type hooks, light guage for good lure action and hooking power but only for 10lb braid or so, any heavier and you may want to look at the Owner ST66's or VMC 3X or even 6X permasteels.

Mmmmm

My reel is set for about 4 kg of drag so line size is irrelevant. VMC 3x strong are on all my other lures as I highly rate them. This one was borrowed off herbie

Is that 4kg of max drag or fighting drag, regardless it's alot for Tailor, that's sort of drag setting would be suitable for say 25lb line being a third of total BS. I always check/change the hooks on nearly al the lures I use bought or borrowed, not very many manufacturers put high strength hardware on to keep purchase price down.

THere is a new treble thatt

Wed, 2011-11-16 23:54

THere is a new treble thatt i tried called VMC Spark Point. Look alot like the Owner's Cutting Point trebles...

I bought a packet to try but haven't got a chance to hook a fish to find out more. They are rated 3X. Notice the convergence of the 3 hooks tends to rust out quickly when I use them in saltwater...

Sometimes it also depends on how deep the hook penetrates. If it is light gauge and only penetrates up to before the barb section, that will give it enough leverage to open up the treble...
