Parachute sea anchors for drifting slow...
Submitted by STORMBOY on Wed, 2016-02-24 13:29
Hello all,
I know there have been numerous posts about this in the past but I was wondering if anybody can recommend parachute sea anchor brands for those yet to buy in 2016?
I have 560c Barcrusher and am an anchoring freak but want to try slow pitch jigging, often going out afternoons when it’s a little more choppy (as I find it hard to get up early)
Have there been many changes in technology or perhaps a new brand that has further improved things? (Great to deploy, recover and of course slow the boat down as much as possible)
I would love your input and I’m sure many other potential buyers will also value the time and effort you give.

Locally made - Custom Sea anchors
Big Fat Snapper (Cam) actually supplies us our Sea Anchors, the 6-9 metre Australian poply tarp or silk version would be perfect for your rig. These sea anchors are definately one of the strongest , longest lasting, always opens, easy to retreive sea anchors on the market.
Even better its supporting a W.A local business, all us staff including shop owner Ryan Thipthorp use his brand. Our prices are the same as Cam but we also offer you a FW discount on top of that. We have another order being dropped off very soon and feel free to PM us for more info.

Bit off topic but how long
Bit off topic but how long should the ropes be for safety?

Rope length
With the standard one length of rope (that comes with the sea anchor) you can put the sea anchor out 5-8m away (personal preference).
Ryan changes the single rope for a V briddle system ie rope to bow/rope to mid ship (retrieve rope back to mid ship also) so the sea anchor is side on (Safe)
That allows the anglers to have a clear area to fish/jig etc without the sea anchor in your way. The rope lengths are approximately 5m plus at a guess.
Safety aspect comes into the position of the sea anchor more so than length of rope ie at the stern with the stern facing into chop can be dangerous especially with a good sea anchor.

I use the big fat snapper
I use the big fat snapper 6-9m version silk with our 6.85 m cruisecraft and rate it highly, dad has a Surtees 5.5 which is almost the same as your bar crusher we use a sea anchor that's nearly half the size of the big fat snapper and it's more than adequate for that size boat, in my opinion there is no need to go anywhere near as big as the 6-9 m meter size BFS.

6-9m Big Fat Snapper
I have a 670HT BarCrusher and I use the canvas 6-9m BFS - works beautifully.

how to rig it
HG'day mate, i have the same boat and am going to get a sea anchor soon. How do you rig it for the 670HT??
Do you do as Oceanside say - bow to midships then retrieve it back to midships. I guess that would be the easiest as you could clip the rope to the bow rail and then the other side to the grab rail on the hard top just behind the seats.
cheers, JJ

Just as you said. Plenty of attachment points on 670HT and I'm not sure it matters too much where it gets attached. A little big of a nuisance getting to the bow on the Barcrusher.
On another topic - having a few problems with my boat - paint flaking in different areas - both wear areas and non-wear areas, also pop rivets holding anchor bracket busted off - wanted to bolt it on, but no access for getting nuts in. Mine is a 2013 - you had any similar problems?

Call Easytow
Mate I had the LED light on my trailer start to smoke when I pluged it in- I called Easytow as the BC lights are custom made (clear) by LED Technologies and explained the issue. The guys there were realy polite and sent me a replacement straight away as my trailer was less than 2 years old... a good company to deal with...

Flaking Paint
My last hull (I think you seen it at Bent street ramp last year, black hull 670C) was replaced under waranty- story for another time..... I had many areas where the paint was bubling up and flaking off... mainly areas of the transom inside and out- the new hull has no paint in these areas so I think it must have been a bit of a common problem
The closed rivets they use are also weak points as they stretch and/or corrode away.. I nearly lost my TM260 that was held on with them so I replaced with 316 nuts and bolts with plastic washers to try and insulate them from the aluminium..

Silk sea anchors from
Silk sea anchors from oceanside are the only way to go.
I've a 8m boat and their silk anchor brings me to a grinding halt, can higly recommend them, I've had mine probably 5-6 years now and still as good as new.

Using 2
Would probably get in the way of anglers and if your doing short drifts that would certainly keep the deckys busy haha

I purchased a cheap $30 one
I purchased a cheap $30 one from a reputable shop which I won't mention, and it is absolutely hopeless for my boat.
Even though it states it is suitable for boats up to 5m, it really is useless.
I will be heading up to Oceanside over the weekend sometime and hopefully get one of the silk ones from them.
If you see this Oceanside, do you have many silk ones to suit a 5.5m ally ?

Sea Anchor
Sorry for the late reply mate, the shops been very busy with the SALE on. We have the silks & tarps in stock and you may of come past today as we've sold a few to FW members. To answer your question yes the 6-9m silk or 6-9m Australian H/D Tarp would suit your boat perfectly.

I have a Barcrusher 680HT and
I have a Barcrusher 680HT and I purchased a Para-Anchors Fisherman 4 from Whitworths. It works a treat and I highly recommend it. It also has a floating retrieval line to pull the chute in from the front. Very effective and easy to use and solid build.

two at once
I have used 2 at once a couple of times and it did not seem to be much different to using 1 which was surprising.

Today was a good day to test
Today was a good day to test out my new sea anchor which I picked up from Oceanside a couple of weeks ago and it worked beautifully.
I bought the Big Fat Snapper, 6-9m silk and on my boat (which has fairly high sides and catches a lot of wind) I never drifted more than 0.7kn and averaged about 0.5kn with winds gusting up to around 15-17kn.
At times when the swell rolled through and the sea anchor did it's thing it actually felt like I was anchored to the bottom.
Just threw it over the side and without fail it "Inflated" and started doing it's thing....very happy and worth the money.
The only thing that would make it better is if it could actually catch a Big Fat Snapper !!
