parents fishing rules

hey crew

as a kid i would love to take my catch home (even though i didnt eat it). however if my dad didnt want to take a fish home or it was to small he would instantly say "its a female you have to throw it back" and i did not a problem.

so i was wondering do your parents or as parents have a way to get kids to throw there fish back?

never had that prob myself. when i went fishing with my dad years ago he was lucky to get any fish in the first place so anything that was caught was kept as long as it was of legal size. you have an interesting predicament tho. good luck with sorting it out

Lessons learnt

Hi Scottland ......Your dad like all dads must be a wise man . We all know that DADS are always right and know about all things .....Unless you talk to MUM .Wink

Sounds like you have been taught the right way as I had by my father and as I have now passed along to my children .

Its up to you to pass on the same respect that you have to your children .

Keep up the good work .

Yes my Dad was the

same, we'd go whiting fishing LB and he catch a little one, say to us, girls we'll let this one go to fight another day.  He also only brought home enough for a feed for us and of course his precious Siamese cat.

Old farts father was the same, only caught  herring (had to be big) whiting, crabs, squid, crayfish (talking 50yrs ago) etc, lets let the little ones go to grow bigger to breed for the  next years fishing expedition.

only prob with these lies

Thu, 2010-11-25 12:41

only prob with these lies you tell young kids , they find out the truth eventually. why not tell the the truth and help them understand right from the beginning .that way the kids will have more faith in you and will grow up with the same if not better understanding of the ocean and all the goodies that come out of it

Funny Story

Thu, 2010-11-25 13:46

Thought I might share a story with you that still makes me smile today.....

My father ,mother myself had made the trip to Carnarvon as we did many times to visit my married sister her husband and their youngster Andrew who was about 4 .

Mum and dad always loved their fishing and this trip was no exception ...So one morning off we went out to Pelican point chasing some whiting as we had done many times before. Wanting to spend a bit of time with their grandchild ,Andrew came with us .

Get out there in the old falcon ,no worries ,walk out the point a way and set up camp for the mornings fishing and off we go. Dad was great of the beach and soon had a couple of great fat sand whiting in the bucket . Andrew the little bugger had other ideas and without anybody noticing had grabbed these whiting out of the bucket of water and placed them gently in the shallows where he was playing .....Off they went .

This exercise continued for most of the morning , until dad returned to the bucket with the last fish from his last peice of prawn.

To his shock ,and utter dismay .........he had only the one fish , the one in his hand.

My little nephew had very quietly without anybody noticing managed to release all but the last fish .............

Mum and I laughed fit to bust .........Dad couldn't seen the funny side at the time !

Mum and I lost the old fella a couple of years back , but this story continues to surface from time to time and that little boy of 4 is now 40, with 2 sons of his own.

Purpose behind it

Thu, 2010-11-25 14:06

Used to take son, Jeff, fishing and shooting when he was only a nipper and the first thing he got taught was that you don't kill anything that you are not going to use. He is now teaching the same ethics to his two boys now.

I was taught the same thing by my father who never once took me fishing or shooting but used to preach it to me before every trip out.

When cutting a fish up for bait you always cut up the biggest not the smallest. That way you are getting more bait out of each one instead of just one or two out of a smaller fish.

be proactive last year when we were down in augusta fishing for whiting with our 2 year old we just explained to him the small ones needed to go back, he got to make the decisions on whether they went in the bucket or back over the side, most of the time he was spot on and all the small ones were released. we only kept the ones we needed for a feed an fun times were had by all.

yip with my son now 10 and older & wiser to pops tricks...lol he has now learnt we fish for the future and take only what we eat. Except blowies, he seems to still think they the ultimate catch and relase fish, prides himself in catching the same blowie five times in one session early in the year...lol.

Teach them young and when old they will become wise...
