Pekan - Malaysia

Well, we've just returned from a wonderful trip visiting Malaysia & Singapore. I have to say, it was the best holiday I've had so far (with minimal fishing involved). We saw so much & ate so many wonderful foods. The hospitality was first class & we're already heavily missing the lifestyle & food!

I was quite fortunate to have Darren (also a FW member) organise a 2 day trip for me & 3 French fishing journalists to fish the waters off the town of Pekan (south east Malaysia).

We used light tackle to chase a variety of fish located approx 30+k's offshore. The spaniards made a good appearance on both days, with poppers & bibbed minnows being the most productive offerings.

The bibbed minnows (Pin Tails) were really versatile. They are a sinking lure which can be retrieved at a very high pace without fouling. We used a 40g version for maximum casting capability.

I really enjoyed using this type of lure. We would cast around the bait schools & use a flat out retrieve with a few flicks of the rod tip. The macks were simply excited by the speed & action this lure made. This type of lure would be the ideal casting lure in Exmouth!

Casting various lures, popping & jigging were also exercised. We used a variety of light demersal jigs (from 20-50g) & threw light to middle weight poppers (FCL Labo & El Toro/Blackjack design). We caught small trout & various cod & trevally species on jigs. Even the skipper got in on the jigging action!

Small GT's also made an appearance & I was unfortunate to have an estimated 15kg model swipe a popper while popping early on day 2.

The macks also collected a few of our jigs & Pin Tails over the 2 day period.

Longtom were in plague proportions, however, Darren managed to connect to umpteen longy's over the trip. (He is the local longtom specialist).

The French fisherman (freshwater specialists), were given a real challenge trying to fish for saltwater species that have completely different behaviors than any freshwater fish. They still managed a few fish amongst them & they really enjoyed the experience.

The food & company was simply sensational! Our next trip back will be booked very shortly indeed.

I've included a few pics.

Daz

P.S. Special thanks to Frank & Paula (for painting our house while we were away!) & Darren & Wendy for a fantastic time.

Did you stop for Chendol at Kota Tinggi?

Looks like you had a great time Daz.  That was my old fishing ground!

Is the boat man now using GPSs?

No we didn't sorry Alfred - that's probably the only dessert we missed.

And yes, the skipper was using a handheld GPS.

Daz looks like a great trip, I heard from Wendy that Sam did pretty well too =0

Those pintails work a treat on the dollies too, in the smaller sizes. I probably have some spares if anyone is chasing a few; 20g, 27 and 30g sizes.

Got ya message before - let's just say I used 25kg baggage allowance to good effect.

what a treat, looks like heapsa fun

at the risk of exposing my ignorance, can i ask anyone what is with the full-face 'masks' etc?
seems prevalent on guys with killer fish and normally some kind of high-end tackle brand shirt?
is it just as simple as a sun protection thing or are we keeping our IDs safe from the readers of teh mags these kinda guys seem to find themselves in?
ie: so i don't recognise em at the pub and have to buy em a bunch of beers and wangle some secrets from them?
haha
rock on

No charters in Pekan Tim.

No charters in Pekan Tim. Well, none that I know of. Darren knows a local ex fishermen over there that has a private vessel. Fishing with him is purely the result of a very good relationship.

Kuala Rompin is very close by & I've read plenty about Ocean Blue being agents for local operators over there. I suppose that is the closest option - although, Rompin is heavily fished/publicised.
