Hey all as winters kicked in and im stuck to landbased fishing ive tried my luck at getting a few yabbies. just wandered if anyone knows much about yabbies caught in the metro area... ive found myself a few spots where I have caught heaps but all seem to be quite small and I havent kept any for chewing yet but the numbers seem to be there. . Is it too cold for the bigguns to come out or are they just not there... any help would be appreciated.

Yabbies
just had a feed of marinated yabbies as a starter to dinner.
The good oil on yabbies (apparently)
yabbies dont really go to ground as such. They are usually captive and don't travel anywhere near as much as Marron.
They are are prolific breeders. If you find the yabbies are small take it as a good sign. It means they are breeding. If you want them to grow larger you basically have to fish the hell out them. If you harvest them every 6 weeks or so you will find the size will increase and will be sustainable. If you find numbers dropping of then back off a bit.
They generally won't need feeding, but if you want to then lupins are good. Failing lupins they will eat most things.
Bait can be anything from fresh meat or cooked. Dog biscuits work well basically anything will get them in the nets.
I Fish some some dams out in the Wheatbelt and usually bring back a couple of good bucketfulls whenever I can. Spend two days cleaning and cooking and keep them in vinegar/garlic and the worlds hottest chillies.
When I prepare them I drain them from the jars and marinate them in whatever's handy and cook in a hot cast iron pan or on the barbie.

Yabbies
Good info from Letsgofishing. The size is small due to too many yabbies in the pond. If you imagine a good size yabbie needs a square foot of space to live. To put 2 yabbies in that square foot then they will be half the size.
Yabbies shed their shells 2=4 times a year, depending on temp, and during that time they are soft and vunerable to attack from other yabbies looking to take over the space. Remove the smaller ones and the others dont have that competition.
Learn to shell small yabbies fast or use them for bait. Bluebones love them and i have got the odd Dhuie on them also.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !
