Pimp my trailer

Stripping back the trailer for the cc for a bit of an over haul ( new springs, hubs, bearings, winch, rollers, rust removal, maybe weld on some more support for the cross braces and a new coat of paint)

Now i want to take it into gnarloo and maybe steep point, what are the things to be wary about? I've heard alot of horror stories from people taking boats into places like that.

So anyone got any tips to toughen up my trailer?

trailer

we put double nuts on all fixings on the trailer, ensure that the wheel arches are secure because there the first thing to go, good h/duty tyres to suit the load as well as the springs . two spare tyres for long hauls, and let your tyres down on tehtracks

good question

Wed, 2010-06-30 08:21

yeah whats the go with letting down your trailer tyres???

i was at gnaraloo a few weeks ago, and obviously let the hilux's tyres down to about 25 psi for a much smoother ride, but wondered about if i had the trailer there.

the dude that does my boat trailer tyres reckons run them at 50psi (light truck tyres), and when the boat is loaded up, run them at 60psi. but does that still apply when you are off road??? obviously, the ride would be smoother, but will it damage the tyres??

trailer tyre pressure

Wed, 2010-06-30 08:36

yeah I have heard that dropping the trailer tyre pressure does help too. Obviosuly it will give the boat a smoother road and will lesson the chances of all your beers exploding...

I have just been over our trailer as we are travelling North, but we will be staying on the sealed stuff the whole way.

It would also be worth checking over all the rollers and making sure they are sitting snug under the boat, just to avoid it moving around and so the boat and trailer move as one. strap it down both front and back. Chock your motor up and maybe tie a rope around that too just to stop any movement.

Spare bearings, or even better a whole spare hub that is packed and ready to go is a great option, but can be pretty costly depending on what brakes you have. Second spare tyre is always worth it.

Main thing is just to take your time going in.

check before gnaraloo

Wed, 2010-06-30 13:46

just got back a month ago check every nut and bolt on trailer double nut all ubolts let car and trailer tyres down to 25psi tie down boat front and rear if you have trailer brakes lock them off stops the brake bashing harshly on and off.If you have bearing buddys knock them off at the begginnig of the track and put caps on also cover the leg of you motor with a sheet or bag stops all the dust getting into the leg do this and you will have no dramas at all p.s dont forget to take a spare hub with bearing fitted easy to change and cheap enough to buy.

Definately let down your trailer tyres as well...   make sure you use high tensial bolts on the brake calipers as this seems to be the first to break off and then jam up on the rims

tyres down

Scotto . we let the trailer tyres down as much as possible/safe going in on the track the boats pretty heavy , but once in travelling back and forward the boats lighter and the you go up and down the worst section to the ramp so i let them down further and it helps saves the springs and further damage to everything else.

if your replacing the springs and running gear use the single leaf springs and grab a spare .. they are cheap and mihgt save you a very agro day or 2 with a broken one .. also bolt on the swing down stub axle on the front of the trailer if it will fit .. it takes a full bearing hub, seals etc and the spare bolts onto it and swings down for beach launching if you need to remove the trailer from the car.
