Popper assist hooks

hi guys notice a lot of people GT poppering run assist hooks and more so one off the tow point in the cup of the lure

is this mainly to allow for fish grabbing the head?

have a few poppers im rigging for kings not sure whether to just run em off where the trebles are or one front and back, etc etc

to rig from the tow point can you just feed it thru the lure ring or do you need to attach a split ring and then solid ring similar to terminal jigging gear?

tossing up whether to just run trebles, singles or assist hooks. so many options

Can be hit and miss i've found.

Definately i good way of rigging and have had plenty of success in the past, but when they're not hitting the head it can result in alot of missed hook ups. This may be different for kings, as i am referring to GTs

I found the shorter fatter chuggers to be best when rigging assists of the tow point. Cubera 125's and the like.

I'm pretty happy just sticking with trebles for now. A bit of experimentation never goes astray though :)

When we were fishing in the Coral Sea with Nomad, we used an assist off the front and a single on the tail. Just rig it through the tow point, no need for more terminal gear. We found about 80% were hooked on the front hook when rigged this way.

Wuoldnt there be issues with the "sharp" edge of the popper rubbing on the assist line causing it to possibly wear through. It would be a pretty tight angle on the line??

Interesting thoughts
Jay did they tie directly to the tow point or use a split shot? Wonder the the sharp edges of the split shot endings could possibly wear out the kevlar?!

No split ring turts, just tie

No split ring turts, just tie it straight to the tow point.

And Neels, nah no problems there.
