i went to my local nut and bolt supplier and bought a heap of unf bolts for an old car i`m restoring
and while i was there i asked about some 12g x 1 1/2" long stainless screws i needed for the boat
and they had them. 27c each so i bought a box. went to buy some spare bungs at my local boat
parts shop and thought i`d have a look at their stainless section and the same screws were $1.50 each,
pays to shop around.

I've had the same experiance
I've had the same experience when buying some replacement bolts for the disc brakes on my old Nissan Patrol 88 GQ.
Factory bolts $60 for 2, nut and bolt shop in Mandurah $8 for 2, and they are high tensile bolt and exactly the same in all aspects.
It certainly does pay you to shop around and not to feel that you must pay the high prices demanded by factory part retailers.

Screws from the boat shop
Screws from the boat shop would be 316 marine grade stainless, the cheaper ones most likely 304 stainless. Althogh 316 are a better for marine applicatjons, if the fasteners are not pemanently submerged in salt water 304 grade will be fine.

Cheaper screws
cheaper screws prob 316, I buy all my stainless fasteners at west coast fasteners and you get 316 grade dirt cheap, boat shops just inflate the price they make very good money from fasteners.

Same
I found the same thing. 316 stainless bolts from Whitworths were $1.80 each. 45c from Venebles.
