Professional fishing perth

Hey was just wondering if anyone here in the professional fishing industry can point me in the right direction on how to get a job in the industry.

Never worked on a boat as a deckie but love the ocean.

For the last 3 years have been diamond  drilling and have been stiched up by the company u work for so i think its time for a new career in something i think i like. 24 and fit hard worker and can learn new skills pretty quickley.

If anyone could point us in the right direction  would be greatly appreciated

Probably not many jobs going

Fisheries gutted the local wetline and shark industry, crays are on quota and deckies work is very start /stop. Plenty of deckies went into mining when the boom was on, came back when worked dropped off, so you are up against experienced blokes also looking for work. That said, chase your dreams, you just never know.

Commercial fishing is a very different take on the ocean, you don't pick your nice days to go out. Definitely a different lifestyle.

Advise

my best advise would be if you don't no any professional fisherman you go to them. Before I start you need to ask yourself which type of fishing industry you want to be involved in. Cray, Shark ,prawn etc. there all different and give different life styles once you work that out , let's say cray industry spend time down at Freo harbour , two rocks marina were ever the most amount of boats are and wait for the boats to come in and ask them straight out for an opportunity to go on there boat to gain experience or are there jobs going, pick any industry and go to them. Also go to the processing factories and ask them they no everything that's going on.  I'm sure the amount of jobs have reduced especially in the crayfishing game but the principal is still the same if you don't no anyone.

Money

The money that used to be in fishing isn't there any more. Now most of the boats are not owner operators so your percentage of the catch after deductions is going to be very small

 A difficult proposition to

Tue, 2017-02-21 14:11

A difficult proposition to break into the game from where you are.

Maybe get yourself some basic skills such as on the TAFE courses and do as above, knockin on boats at the wharf.
But its a difficult proposition to sell yourself other than if you find someone who's a friend of a friend.

Have to say, as mentioned above that the job is COMPLETELY different from how you imagine it.
Have taken on many guys in a similar position to yourself as 4th or 5th decky and I reckon 3/4 dont last the first trip (14 days) and maybe a couple who actually made a go of it longer than we had to keep them on.

To be fair, it was a hard game we were in, but as a newby any commercial fishing will seem a hard game and the pay similar.

Out of maybe 20 blokes.
Pretty much a OHS requirement that you have basic survival training anyhow, and that'd show a future employer your serious.
