I think you may have needed

I think you may have needed the international version to do that, but did you try turning advanced menu options on and trying again. Can you change units of speed? (should be able to change between knots and mph at least)

Rough calculation

Wed, 2011-06-22 16:12

All I do is a rough calculation , 2 x metres = about 4-5 inches short of a fathom/ 6 x feet. Proper calculation is around 1.88 metres = 1 fathom/ 6 feet.

Might need to revise your

Might need to revise your calculations there carnarvonite ;)

A fathom is about 1.83 (or exactly 1.8288) so would be 6 or 7 inches short (6.74)

Fathom

Like measuring rope, one full arm span of rope is around 6 feet if you're not 6'6"tall like a mate found out when he inherited his ex pro wetliner grandfathers charts with all the depths pencilled in complete with drawings of the land marks and compass bearings. All depths were sounded by lead line and written in fathoms except his grandfather was 6'6"tall and his fathoms were something like 7 foot not 6, once he worked out the differential all the spots started to appear on the first smaller model echo sounders.

What is a few feet between friends, unless you are going to sit down and work your tide times / lats/ longs to give an accurate measurement.

I highly doubt the difference

You're right. I highly doubt the difference will ever be important for nearly any fishing anyone actually does (especially due to even small tidal information), but still useful to know what it should be then choose to round it how you like. Though 6" is easier to use, as its half a foot. I'll stick with meters and international unit sounders though ;)

Bunbury inner harbour

Wed, 2011-06-22 17:03

When they were dredging Bunburys inner harbour, all the soundings were done by lead line at 20 foot intervals and 3 inch measurements before and after the dredge went through so they could work out how many cubis yards as they were then had been shifted. The time was taken before and after each line of soundings was done so that the exact tide level could be established so correction to actual measurement could be done. 'Sounding weight was around-3-4lb and we would do literally hundreds of pick and drop the lead each day for months on end.

The surveyor had to take the figures, times and tide levels back to the office and plot it all out on a chart manually for a weekly and monthly report on progress made.
