Question
Submitted by sea-kem on Sun, 2011-03-27 17:20
Just in the process of making up some paternosters for the coming trip up north. Was going to use 150lb mono leader with the armour spring over the loop to hook connection but the biggest i can find is 2mm and it doesn't fit. Now looking at 100lb mono leader which works a treat. The question is would you guys use the 100lb leader considering the beasts that are likely to bite up there? Any feed back appreciated also any other ideas. Trying to minimise as many swivel connections as i can as you all know these are where breaks are most likely to occur.

Dropper loops
All I use is a paternosta rig with 100-150lb mono and tie dropper loop knots and put eyes/loops on the end of the hook traces for ease in changing or replacing. If you're lucky/ unlucky enough to hook a double header of big red etc you are going to lose one anyway

Cheers John. didn't think of
Cheers John. didn't think of doing that. Considering the Red I caught last year it nearly straightened the hook out I'm going for biggers and slightly heavier rigs.

Fancy
Personally I don't go for anything fancy, 7-8/0 tarpons or 9/0 greenwave live bait hooks off ebay. Never had one straightened. Tried tuna circles and can't catch bugger all with them, cannot resist the yank the line as soon as a bite is felt, besides, if it works why change?

I use the same setup as John
I use the same setup as John if I use a paternoster, it is so quick and easy to change hook leaders and you can tie up enough for a few months in a hour infront of the TV one night. 80 or 100lb is usually the standard leader.

Cheers guys. How long do you
Cheers guys. How long do you make the hook leaders? It's funny you mention the Tarpons John we switched over to them halfway through the last trip after realising the Gamkatsus just weren't up to it.

Hook traces
Usually make the hook trace about 6-8 inches over all, too long and they tend to tangle or snag up on the bottom

Rolled up
Usually I tie two small then one large dropper loops then without cutting it off continue doing the same and when you think you have enough spares for the day , roll them back on to the spool. That way when you lose one all you do is unroll one and cut it off next to the large loop leaving enough for you to tie a swivel on and connect it to your main line. Add your hook traces and you're back in business in a minute or so, quicker than trying to untangle a complete one rolled up.

i would tend to try around
i would tend to try around the 120lb line. very easy to tie and as strong as. just dont buy the cheap and nasty stuff as it will break at the knot.

I think I am even lazier!
I just tie the droppers with a mini-modified surgeons knot, then thread the hook straight through the dropper loop and bob's your uncle. Only been bitten off by the taxman and use 80-150lb depending on the target and depth.
If I revert to a snell rig just tie the original look shorter then the snell and tie another mini-mod surgeons loop to the end of the snell set and do a double cats paw effect. Works a treat. So far no knot failures on the surgeons loops.

Cheers for the feedback guys.
Cheers for the feedback guys. we lost a few fish last year up there due to them biting through the mono leader. Just trying to improve catch rates. Will definately make up some short wire leaders to attach to the mono leader. there were the unstoppables though.

Carnarvonite can you explain
Carnarvonite can you explain what it is you do with the hook traces? If you have a dropper loop, do you not just use that loop to go direct to the hook?
Dont have a picture or anything do you? About to make up all the rigs for Exxy next month and always keen to see new ideas!
Dan
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Hook traces
All it is is a hook one end and a loop on the other, usually of heavier line than the rest of the rig. To connect it to the rig, feed the loop of the hook trace over the dropper loop then feed the hook end through the dropper loop and pull tight.
There was a demo of this on another thread asking how to attach braid/ line to a double just recently.
If your tie hooks straight on to the dropper loop, its more or less the same procedure.
The reason why I don't attach my hooks direct to the dropper loop is if you are using heavy line it won't fit through the hook eye when doubled and if you get bitten off you cannot just add another another hook to the rig

your spot on there
your spot on there John.
When the fish are in a feeding frenzy you dont want to be messing around with whole rigs.
While fishing in exxy a few years back we got onto a school of big reds and 3 of 4 hooks were getting bitten off , with the setup like John explained the new hooks were put on in seconds , we managed to get 6 good reds out of about 25 hooked in about 15 minuits. if we had to tie whole rigs we would certainly wouldnt have got what we did.

Mate i fished exy and the monties and only used a max of a 100 lb droppers for bottom bashing and got busted off minimal. I did how ever have some great catches i did use size 7 or better and had a great run if you want to fish for the teehty critters you got to use a wire or a 7 strand but just like any fishing use the rod and the drag you have and take your time if you want more pm me and i will tell
