Question for Hilux drivers

 G'day all,

Just wondering if any of you Hilux drivers have experienced SRS Airbag warning light staying on.

My 2006 HiLux's warning light decided to come on today....for no apparent reason????

Any info would be appreciated....before i go down the dealer pathway which always seems to cost a fortune.

Cheers

Yeah mate,

Had it on my last lux (06). Spoke to the mechanic (actually quite a good bloke), and he goes "yeah it's a very easy fix, there's a tiny little spring that breaks and I'll get the replacement from Toyota. It's a 10 minute job."

Yes it's a 10 minute job, but the "tiny little broken spring" is a $650 dollar part.

Clock spring. Can be the

Clock spring. Can be the cause, gota get it scanned and pull the codes, I am currently diagnosing a triton with airbag light on, theres a noise behind the steering wheel when turning and the code reoccures immedietley so I was thinking broken clock spring causing open circuit but the code is related to the squib in the drivers airbag, im just waiting for more info for testing. Id never be keen on dealers, if u know of a reputable auto sparky or efi specialist, hitem up and ask if they have done airbag work, or even ur local mechanic, most shops have scan tools now, just depends if they replace stuff based on fault codes (guess and hope) or diagnose it correctly and get it right the first time. Some lights automatically come on after 10 years to indicate the system needs to be "serviced".

Yes it's called the "Clock Spring-Spiral Cable" and the small spring inside breaks, which then makes your SRS warning light come on.

They have come down in price recently,I'll check for you shortly, and let you know the price.

Do you want it fitted,if so are you NOR or South.

Thanks for the replies, I am located north.

The owners manual says bring to dealer immediately. Is it safe to drive with this warning on?

Cheers

 Hopefully this short video

Hopefully this short video works- It will explain to you what has to be replaced. The spring is not a separate part.

What you need to purchase is the black/yellow unit, then have it fitted.

I can help you with the price for the unit, it will be cheaper than $600-then maybe see if kempy (as he is in Malga) can give you a price to have the unit fitted.

Hope this helps.

2011 Hilux

Fri, 2012-11-16 12:12

I bought a 2011 hilux from brand new...on the first day the airbag light came on and wouldn't go off.... I called the dealer and they said 'dont worry about it' its nothing important....yeah right....after many phone calls and an experienced toyota technician from their head office coming to inspect the car they worked out that they had a problem with one of the sensors in the airbag unit computer. I made them replace the whole unit....lucky it was under warranty or would have been expensive....it apparently is a known problem that toyota dont like to admit to, but it is something to do with the airbag not switching on/off.... and could mean that the airbag wont deploy when required....quite dangerous really!

Well....I would like to Firstly thank all you for your comments and advice.

I do not post very often.....but there sure are some helpful people on this Forum.

This morning I popped into the dealer I bought the car from (their Service Dept) as I was driving near by. I suppose I was just wanting to reassure myself that the airbag was not going to explode in my face or more importantly into one of my kids faces without warning.

I approached the counter &  I was greeted with a "Good morning, how can I help you"  he then promptly advised me that I had not been there to service the car since 2009.

He must have seen me rock up and typed in my rego into their computer system.

I then told him about the warning light....."Oh that'll be an expensive job mate"he stated. ......I dont wanna tell you want went through my mind!!!!!

The service fellow then asked me how many km's the car had done.........I replied 105K and he said......"Ah....can put that through as warranty claim for ya mate"

Now you can really guess what went through my mind hey? ..........."Book me in please!"

So it's getting done next week.........Time for a Lotto ticket or 2!

I'll let you all know how i get on with it all.

Cheers

They only do that if its been a known fault. I know Yamaha do it with one of the hpdi oil pumps as well. We out of warranty but still supply the upgrade free of charge.
