Radio Problems
Hey All
I need some help with the radio in my old mans boat.
He originally had one in there, but it hasn't worked for a while. Power to it but its always just static and can't here anyone talking etc
So I thought it had just past its used by date, and time for a new one.
So bought a new one, put it in, headed out and seemed to be working fine. Here everyone etc etc
But, I turned the sounder on, and the radio went all statically (word?) so I just thought it was interference, and turned the radio off (was only in the harbour).
Anyway later on turned the sounder off and the radio back on, but still all I get is static!! So I am worried now that its not the radio at all!
The sounder/radio are run off different wiring, but not sure if they hook up to the same battery or not (haven't checked yet) and there is the 4 way switch (1/2/both/off) but this isn't connected to the accessories, so thinking the accesories are connected straight to the batteries.
Surely I haven't stuffed the radio from turning the sounder on? I will check to see if they are running of different batteries, but surely this isn't the problem??
Any ideas greatly appreciated??

Motor
Is it only when the motor is running? Could be static coming from the alternator or the other end of the scale is from the aerial or lead.

bad earth too!! check that they arent earthed to the same spot! and that your earth is good

Unplug the aerial connection
Unplug the aerial connection and see if the static goes away - don't key the mike without the aerial in though - then plug the aerial back in and see if the static noise comes back? - change out your aerial if this is the case. - broken cable or bad connection to aerial....Had the same on mine last week, have another rig in my shed and swapped the aerial out - all fixed.

Might sound like a silly suggestion, but if the radio is 27 meg perhaps the squelch is too low?

If they are close together you could be getting some feedback in the reciever causing the mute to break, the earth and the antenna are good tricks as well, if all else fails put a ferrite choke over the power feed and the antenna to filter any RF spikes, 27 Meg will inherently be noisy due to the frequency range, VHF will not. It's not a GME by any chance?
