Raymarine ST5000 autopilot
Anyone know anything about these units ?
mine has developed a fault that sees it change course for absolutely no reason. One minute, cruising in a straight line at 20 knots, next second, hard turn to port. No warning no edging, just whack, straight over. Had to disengage to regain control. Not good for the ticker, I can tell you !
fluxgate compass is only a couple of years old, so probably OK. Possibly something to do,with rudder gain which I don't seem to be able to adjust. See image.
The rudder angle is the bar graph on the bottom of the display. You can see that it is on 30 degrees. I would have thought that this is merely a display of where the rudder is set but not sure it should be locked over at 30 degrees.
if no-one has any ideas can someone recommend a repairer ?
cheers

cant see the pic mate - we had a problem on a simrad a few years ago which turned out to be a compass sensor.... apparently they can also be affected bymobile phones (magnetic field ?) but don't know if that's true
We took ours to Taylor marine who I think sent it east....

Thanks Pelagic. I think it
Thanks Pelagic. I think it might be the rudder sensor. I need a service in the next month or so so I'll have Brett Ward have a look at it then.

Which Mode?
Does it do this in track mode or heading mode or both? Is it always to port?
Our unit was doing this a few years back in heading mode (both directions). From memory we did a recal or refered to as a "Automatic Compass Deviation Correction" in the manual and it came good. Not that this was necessary the problem.
It also occasionally resets the sensitvity value in "Rudder Gain" (I think) This is a problem in track mode as in a crosswind the autopilot tends to agressively chase any small deviations in cross track error.
Couple of things you could try if you already haven't. Let me know if you dont have a manual as I have a link to an online copy.

Raymarine have confirmed that the rudder gain sensor is the problem. Looking to get that sorted now.
