Repair rod holders - welding
Submitted by bsir on Fri, 2018-01-05 05:43
hi,
ive now got a couple of rod holders that look like the attached. While it's pretty cheap and easy to replace them , I'd rather get stronger ones.
my options are buy something to replace them, or get these welded up properly. I'm not sure how a full weld on 2mm ish SS would go and whether it's worth the hassle. From the factory, these just have 4-5 spot welds on them that fail.
what have others done?
Can anyone recommend some rod holders built to last?
thanks

I have the same ones but mine only have 3 tacks on each.

As Grant says they work fine
As Grant says they work fine and you would have to be a gun arc welder (no names mentioned :P ) to tack them. Mig is the way to go as they are made from probably .6 material, tissue paper in other words.

Solid ones are cheap enough on ebay
just look for the ones described as Cast--also, some of the ones (but not all) described as heavy duty also have cast tops. try to get a lok at the picture of them, and you will see that they look different to what you have, with a heavy cast top fully welded on . Thi is just one type, plenty more out there. just avid the ones like yours with the pressed, curved tyoe top--they are all weak.

The problem is where the
The problem is where the salt water gets under the holder and cooks away. They need to be sealed up to cure that problem.
