Reversing Cameras

Hi all

Having recently taken possession of my new Navara ST-X, I had a well liner and canopy installed yesterday. To round out the package I'm seriously considering installing a reversing camera, to take the guess work out of reversing up to the boat....especially after my missus got sidetracked while directing me backwards to hook the boat onto the Nav on Monday.

Not only did I miss the boat's tow hitch, but by the time she cried out 'Stop', I'd already struck the Nav's rear step on the boat's tow hitch....only just marked it but I wasn't happy.

Anyway, while I was in ARB yesterday, I was looking at their reversing camera setups with the display screen that replaces your normal rear vision mirror and only becomes a display screen when you select reverse....sounds like a great idea as I like that better than having a second screen mounted somewhere for the camera to connect into.

As I pursue this further, I was wondering if anyone else has a similar setup and what your thoughts are on why you chose the setup you have.

Thanks in advance of your comments.

I've got one hooked up to my pioneer DVD deck, it comes in handy when backing solo and I find it useful to see objects behind that the rear vision mirror can't pick up. I think I would still want to be able to use my mirror tho, but I can't comment cause I've never seen that setup in action.

mate since you have a canopy

mate since you have a canopy you cant use your rear vision mirror you may aswell just get it replaced with the screen type mirror.

we have a waeco reverse camera setup with a 7" screen mounted on our dash. we have a single camera on the back of the car. if i ever get another one i would get one with the dual camera - one pointing down at the towball and one straight back, rather than having to have it on an angle to get half and half of each view.

we have 'accidently' wired ours so it is on all the time and not just when reversing - it is handy so you can keep a better eye on th trailer and what is on the road around you.

good luck with it.

Reversing camera

Thanks guys for your feedback, much appreciated.

Here's one that I was looking at today, it's similar to the ARB unit but this one's got a slightly bigger screen (4.2" vs. ARB's 3.5"): http://www.thecarkitcompany.com.au/index.php/products/store/details/88/8/parking-sensors-and-reversing-cameras/carkitco-rvm42-reversing-camera

Although the ARB unit has a slightly smaller screen (3.5" vs. 4.2"), it will accept a 2nd camera so I'll check to see if that option is available with the one in the link. The camera in the link can also be turned on while you're driving along, so you can see what's behind you...probably won't see much with the boat hooked up but a 2nd camera mounted on the back of the boat, could come in handy while heading up the highway or reversing it into the carport.
