Rifle calibre crackdown
Submitted by timboon on Tue, 2023-02-14 16:16
Here we go again, another firearm "crack down".....
Recently they came up with the brainwave to psych test lecensed firearms owners, all 80,000 of us ( because clearly we are running around going fucking mad ), and now they want to outlaw certain calibres...
While it is only going to affect a small minority of owners by the sounds of things, it feels like these sort of vote grabbing changes will continue and it will become too difficult and expensive to own a firearm...

Zero consultation.
Headline grabbing bullshit from the masters of it. Quick online look this arvo and I couldnt find what calibres are going to be bought back, whatever it is a continuation of the erosion of our rights and heading towards no hunting or fishing.

From what I understand it
From what I understand it won't affect many of us depending on what type of shooting you do.Its the cannons they want. 22/250, 45/70 and the like.Apparently there's less than 250 of these rifles registered in wa and about 70 of them are already in retail outlets ( gun shops) still bullshit robbing legit owners of these

It's all the hyper large
It's all the hyper large caliber rounds. Very specific long range stuff. Quite odd because apparently there are only 250 odd rifles affected by this change.
Nearly all will be custom rifles and all reloading their own rounds.
Smells political not practical to me.

Na not the large calibers,
Na not the large calibers, more the high powers like .338 Lapua, Weatherby Magnums etc
Plus of course the .50BMG
Doesnt look like the large calibers like 45/70 and 44 mags are included

That's why I said hyper. Plenty of the larger stuff survived the list. 416 rigby still ok but 416 barret on the list.

Agreed Bodgy. There are
Agreed Bodgy. There are probably little or none of these that aren't licenced so it is clearly political IMO. A mate who is a crack shooter and often empl;oyed by councils to shoot stuff said there's only 14 50 cal sniper rifles and they shoot at a specific location only. Not much of a risk is it?

At a specific location owned by someone that absolutely has the premiers ear?
There's something fishy about it alright.

Brought to you by the Government that 'kept us all safe' by banning plastic gel blaster guns i.e. glorified nerf guns. The Quigley/Papalia/McGowan circle jerk is a worrying one to say the least.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

I think it’s more to do
With taking kids life’s and your own . Hence tests they want done yearly on mental health . Shootings in America . I handed all mine in ( semi autos only , years ago) . It only takes a few people to do wrong thing everyone cops it . Knee jerk reaction once again . Pretty soon everything most of us enjoy will be taken away .what will happen when zombies take over the world ( where f&$@ed) bows / gings ( sling shot) crossbows , everything I grew up with taken away . Sad but it’s the new world . Hunt and gather for family gone now

Unfortunately with no
Unfortunately with no opposition party, they can do as they please.
An easy vote grab.
In ten years when they've made it too difficult and too expensive for the average licensed firearms owner to bother, bikies and the likes will be 3D printing whatever fucking rocket launcher they want.
I've got no problem with adhering to rules and regs that are well thought out and with good reason to introduce.
It's all about the vote now, common sense doesn't prevail.

Suggestion
I go along with Timboons sentiments above.
Suggestion;
Some of you guys should join or form a committee or Working Group to lobby the Government.
Heres the perfect chance for those who didn't like the Demersal outcome, to show how they will do it differently?
Idea being that without any opposition to it, they can use it to justify their restrictions, being "universally unopposed".
Just be prepared for people to get the pitchforks out later and chase you around because "you did nothing".
Or are "in their pockets".
Or "just gave lip service :-)"
Or "shoulda done something..."
Or worse "why did you guys make those stupid rules..."
Note-this is tongue in cheek, with a bit of truth behind it.
I've heard all the above here in general and worse, personally while out and about.
But seriously, from my position though, I am a paid member of the SSAA, and also contribute to the National Shooting Council who go a bit harder than the SSAA.
Suggest minimum joining BOTH the above organisations NOW, rather than saying "I'm not giving them anything, they've never helped me".
The Gov process involves chipping away piece by piece as each time most people say "that wont affect me", when it does theres not enough left to care.

Point well made and its time
Point well made and its time I put some money towards those that hopefully have some weight....
We dont need an NRA but fuck me, this country is weak as piss at times....
On a slightly lighter note....
I knew a fella who lived in a remote area albeit fairly close to Adelaide, remote suited him as he was a market gardener lets just say....
He one day had a visit from the police, i'm not sure if he got done for the variety of tomatoes he was growing but I know they went through his gun safe...
He had a .338, on this 338 it had a large muzzle break...
One of the wise ass young coppers tried to go him for having a silencer on the rifle, so while they were occupied sitfing through the other rifles in the safe he's slid a round into the .338 and let it go down the driveway while they were all standing in the shed, he was quick enough to get his ear muffs on but my guess is that young cop still suffers from hearing loss from that day....
I hope he got a refund on the silencer as it didn't work very well that day :)

Silencers are an interesting
Silencers are an interesting situation, illegal here for some reason, encouraged in NZ and other countries.

It's a sad state of affairs Boon
Our fishing rights are being stripped.
Shooters/hunters are getting the rough end of the Pineapple.
It seems like the "socialists" are taking over and having their way.
The Shooters and Fishers Party seem pretty toothless- many would say the same about Recfishwest.
The Eagles will probably have another shit year .
Seems like the yanks are trying to start WW3.
Doesn't seem to much cause for optimism lately!
Could be time for a Fishwrecked Party to be formed so we can maybe claw back some of our lost leisure activities from these numpties in power.
How many members do we have on the forum?
I think all you need to form a political party is 500 members??
Otherwise, we just keep taking it up the kybher pass I guess.
I'll stop my rambling rant now lol.

Going well thanks Boon
Wouldn't say I'm in prime condition similar to some of the older Eagles players.
Went fishing the other week for the first time in 3 years with the local charter operator here in Geraldton. Caught a couple of small Pink Snapper and a couple of Rat Sambos, so better than nothing I guess.
Still focusing on land fishing I.e. prospecting these days.
