River fishing in and around Nannup

Hiya All,

Im brand new to the forum.

I have recently bought a property down in Nannup which fortunately has a fair chunk of the Blackwood running down one side and was wondering if anyone has any advice as to what and how I should be fishing it, so far i have been unsuccesful with the spinners Ive used but in all honesty Ive not had alot of chance to get down there as yet. 95% of my fishing experience is Perth beaches with the odd trip to Wedge or White Hills so river fishing especially fresh water is very new to me.

I would expect Redfin and Trout to be about, but until I catch some I had to say for sure!!!  What areas of the river should I be looking, flat calm areas? snags? quickly flowing narrow sections? rapid looking sections? The exploring I have done I seem to have a little sections of these areas around. What baits, lures etc should I be looking at??

Any help and/or advice much appreciated!!

Cheers

Barty

I used to fish a lot around

Thu, 2012-04-26 02:10

I used to fish a lot around nannup and had bit of succes with the rainbows, we used spinners in gold or orange type colours, also small minnows work. I have never caught a Red Fin down there but maybe in the larger pools. Most of my success was during spirng, when the insects start to come out and the fish are more active. I would concentrate on areas where the fish would be feeding, like narrow fast flowing areas or at the top or bottom of rapid sections, particularly where the current may funnel insects and baitfish down in to a fairly narrow point. You'll figure it out, just remember trout are very reliant on water temperatures, so in the warmer months you are much less likely to catch one, in my experinece they are more active when the weather starts to warm up in spring but the water temp is still cold....floating an un wieghted worm down a set of rapids is always a winner also !!

Good luck

Nannup is an awesome

Nannup is an awesome spot.

There are both Trout and Reddies aswell as some good sized Marron.

Spring is definately the time to fish the Blackwood, for trout look for skinny runs with rocks for the fish to hide behind.

Also the trout will hold in pools above and below rapids when they are not feeding but can still be tempted with the right fly or lure.

Redfin will be in the bigger pools around any structure,Halco laser pro 45 are a great lure for both reddies and trout I find them good because they swim well in both fast and still water so you can walk up the river and fish evey section without changing lure.

Another thing I like about Nannup is you are so close to many more trout fishing spots like the Donnelly and the streams in the area also hold some trout.

Hope this helps.

Regards Choc.

Sun, 2012-05-13 20:25

Love the blackwood, yet to get a big trout down there but had plenty of sucess on the smaller ones using small celta spinners around the faster sections and in the eddies below fast sections of water, got 17 small rainbows in a few hours fishing along there in winter or spring, not to sure exactly when it was but it was raining while i was trying to fish... so i assume either early winter or spring.. Also ive never caught a redfin from the blackwood has anyone else had any luck in there?

All over the place mate,

Wed, 2012-05-16 18:36

All over the place mate, usually fish rivers such as the warren, capel, collie, and even the blackwook but theres heaps of other rivers/dams that are worth a shot, But as i was saying the blackwood is one place im still yet to catch one but get into plenty of trout through there, you should do okay with the trout with the cooler weather now and getting a bit a rain to put some water in there but i guess you'll have to wait and see. fish in the larger pools for redfin and below rapids is normally my best spot for trout :) good luck.

We have been getting some

Mon, 2012-08-20 07:19

We have been getting some cracker reddies in the Warren lately. If the reddies are there you will get them all day long.

As far as the trout go this is when they will be breedeing and most trout are up in the streams this time of year so you will struggle in the Blackwood.

 I always seem to struggle

Sat, 2012-08-25 17:57

I always seem to struggle finding many trout or Redfin until the weather starts warming up again? Any ideas where all the Redfin go in winter? Maybe something to do with the cold water?

I am in Busselton,Redfin 4

Wed, 2012-08-29 18:42

I am in Busselton,Redfin 4 Life the fish are normally still in the same places just really lazy through the colder times of the year.

Try using soft plastics or lures that will get right to the bottom of the water you are fishing, remember they will be lazy so i find a really slow retrieve will tend to get them to strike, and dont be scared to run your lure through the same spot up to a dozen times.

Cheers for that I'll take it

Cheers for that I'll take it into account next time, but I know what you mean I have definitely noted their laziness in the cooler months. They're starting to fire up again now got a decent haul of Redfin the other day and have seen a few trout around! (havnt tried the blackwood yet)
